Chapter 1 - The Midnight Interception
The black town car had barely cleared the wrought-iron perimeter gates of the Grand Belmont when high beams flared in my side mirror.
A silver Maserati Levante swerved directly across the two-lane access road, tires screeching against wet asphalt as it boxed my sedan against the stone retaining wall.
My driver, Marcus, slammed his foot onto the brake pedal, bringing our car to a sudden halt three inches from the Maserati’s front bumper.
"Stay inside, Miss Sterling," Marcus commanded, reaching under his left arm to unsnap the retention strap of his service weapon.
The driver’s door of the Maserati flew open with a violent thud.
Julian stumbled out into the yellow glare of the headlights, his bow tie undone and flapping in the humid night breeze, his tuxedo jacket ripped at the right seam where the arresting officer had shoved him earlier.
Behind him stepped an older man with silver-slicked hair and a navy wool overcoat: Judge Thomas Vance, Eleanor’s elder brother and the presiding magistrate of the state appellate division.
Julian lunged forward, pounding both fists against my tinted passenger window with enough force to make the heavy glass vibrate.
"Roll it down, Clara!" Julian screamed, his saliva flecking the glass. "Roll it down or we’ll have the county sheriff impound this vehicle as an unliquidated marital asset!"
I touched the console button, lowering the window precisely two inches.
The damp night air rushed in, carrying the scent of burned rubber and Julian’s heavy alcohol breath.
"You have ten seconds to clear this road, Julian," I said, my voice dead level. "Or Detective Walker will add felony vehicular endangerment to your mother’s grand larceny docket."
Judge Vance stepped up to the glass, resting two heavy, signet-ringed fingers against the door frame.
"You overreached tonight, little girl," Judge Vance said, his baritone smooth, resonant, and dripping with institutional venom. "The search warrant on box 314 was signed by a municipal clerk without jurisdictional authority. I just vacated it thirty seconds ago via emergency telephonic docket."
Julian’s face twisted into an ugly, triumphant sneer.
"Hand over the stone, Clara," Julian demanded, extending his trembling palm through the narrow gap.
Before I could answer, a loud, pneumatic hiss cut through the darkness from behind their Maserati.
