My Ex-Fiancé Thought His Stolen Fortune Was Safe—Until Page 19 Of The Trust Seized His Flagship Penthouse At Dawn!

Chapter 5 - The Unencrypted Drive

Miriam held the leather binder out with trembling hands, keeping her eyes fixed on the pavement.

"Eleanor made me route everything through seven blind trusts in Panama," Miriam said, her voice barely audible over the hum of the idling reefers. "She told me Julian had secured your family's unconditional guarantee. She said you would sign the co-mingling waivers right after the vows."

I took the ledger, flipping open the first tab.

Inside was a meticulous, handwritten log of every transaction executed by Eleanor Hayes over the past thirty-six months.

"Page nineteen," Miriam pointed with a trembling finger. "The Hampton house wasn't in tax default. Eleanor mortgaged it to purchase fifty-one percent of the preferred stock in your father's development firm through a nominee account."

My fingers tightened around the leather binding until the stitching creaked.

"She tried to mount a hostile takeover of Sterling Capital?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"She didn't just try, Miss Sterling," Miriam answered, swallowing hard. "The final transfer of fifty million dollars was scheduled to execute at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning, using the wedding settlement fund as the liquidity trigger."

I closed the book with a heavy snap that sounded like a gunshot in the damp night air.

"Marcus," I called out.

"Yes, Miss Sterling?"

"Call Director Sterling at headquarters. Tell him to execute the clawback protocol on Class B shares immediately."

Marcus pulled his phone from his pocket, dialing the emergency boardroom line.

Across the asphalt, Carter slumped against the truck tire, weeping into his dirty sleeves.

"It’s over, Carter," I said, looking down at him without a shred of pity. "Your mother’s empire was built on stolen paper, and the ink just ran out."

Two Port Authority police cruisers rolled into the terminal yard, their sirens wailing as they surrounded the flatbed trucks.

The officers dismounted, weapons at the low-ready, immediately taking control of the drivers and sealing the shipping containers with official red evidence tape.

I walked back toward my town car, the cool harbor wind clearing the stench of diesel fuel from my lungs.

As I reached the door, Marcus held up his phone, his face pale under the amber light.

"Miss Sterling," Marcus said, his voice unusually tight. "It’s your father’s estate attorney on line one. He’s calling from Geneva."
