Chapter 2 - The Jurisdictional Wall
A second unmarked vehicle, an armored black Suburban with state government plates, pulled up hard against the Maserati’s rear bumper, cutting off their only retreat route.
Two plainclothes agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped out into the headlights, their gold badges catching the beam.
"Step away from the glass, Counselor," the lead agent barked, flashing an official federal credential folder. "FBI Financial Crimes Task Force. Special Agent Miller."
Judge Vance didn't flinch. He slowly pivoted, looking down his aristocratic nose at the federal badge.
"Agent Miller, this is a local domestic property matter currently under appellate review," Judge Vance stated, his voice ringing with practiced judicial authority. "I am the presiding judge of the Third District. I suggest you consult with the state attorney general before you interfere with an ongoing state court stay."
"The state court stay doesn't apply to Title 18, Section 1344, Judge Vance," Agent Miller replied, stepping directly between Julian and my car door. "Bank fraud involving interstate wire transfers to the Cayman Islands falls under exclusive federal jurisdiction."
Julian backed away toward the Maserati’s hood, his eyes darting frantically between his uncle and the agents.
"What bank fraud?" Julian stammered, wiping sweat from his temple. "The four hundred thousand was a family bridge loan from our private accounts!"
"It wasn't your private account, Julian," I said through the cracked window, rolling the glass all the way down. "It was an FDIC-insured escrow account underwritten by Sterling Capital."
I handed a slim manila folder through the window to Agent Miller.
"Exhibit C," I continued, looking straight into Julian’s bloodshot eyes. "The electronic signature Eleanor used to divert the funds was logged from your terminal at the brokerage at two-fourteen yesterday afternoon."
Julian’s jaw dropped. He whipped around to his uncle.
"Uncle Thomas... I was in the boardroom! I didn't authorize that transfer!"
"Your mother used your biometric master key, son," Judge Vance whispered, the arrogance finally draining from his posture as he realized the trap.
"Both of you are formally served with a federal preservation order," Agent Miller announced, slapping two certified summons packets onto the hood of the Maserati. "Every asset belonging to Hayes Logistics and the Vance Family Trust is frozen effective midnight."
Julian lunged forward again, his fingers clawing at the open window of my car.
"You can't freeze the company, Clara! We have payroll tomorrow morning! We have thirty-eight freight carriers arriving at the Port of Newark by six o'clock!"
"Then you'd better start unloading them by hand, Julian," I said.
Marcus hit the gas, the heavy sedan surging forward as Julian was shoved back onto the pavement, his scream swallowed by the roar of the V8 engine.
As we cleared the gate and accelerated down the highway, my encrypted iPad chimed with a high-priority alert from the Port Authority land registry.
