The Quiet Ledger
Chapter 5 - The Visitor at the Gate
By Friday evening—the exact deadline Graham had given her to clear out of the house—the black town car pulled through the private security gates of the Mercer estate.
Graham stood on the grand stone front porch, unwashed, his tie gone and his shirt rumpled, looking like a man who had aged ten years in a single week.
As the car door opened, Lydia stepped out, wearing a simple cream trench coat, her hair pulled back in a sleek knot.
She wasn't carrying boxes.
She wasn't packing her belongings into the trunk of a rented sedan.
She was carrying baby Grace in a soft wool carrier against her chest, her expression completely serene.
""Lydia,"" Graham said, rushing down the steps with his hands outstretched, his voice cracking with desperate humility. ""Lydia, please. Let's talk. It was a misunderstanding—my mother, Natalie, they pushed me into this—""
Lydia stopped ten feet away, raising a single hand to halt him in his tracks.
""You told the nurses I was a burden, Graham,"" Lydia said, her voice clear, calm, and utterly devoid of anger. ""You brought divorce papers into a maternity ward twenty-three minutes after I delivered our child because you thought you could trade me in for Vanessa and a bigger corporate portfolio.""
""I was stupid!"" Graham pleaded, falling down the first two stone steps as if he might actually beg. ""I lost my mind! This is our home—our family!""
""It was never your home, Graham,"" Lydia replied softly, turning her head slightly to look up at the massive wrought-iron double doors of the estate. ""It was an asset on my balance sheet. And as of four o'clock this afternoon, my audit team has formally repossessed the property.""
