The Quiet Ledger
Chapter 4 - The True Owner
The silence in the boardroom was absolute.
Even the low hum of the centralized air conditioning seemed to vanish, leaving only the sound of Graham’s ragged breathing as he stared at the name of the woman he had tried to evict from a hospital bed forty-eight hours ago.
""That's impossible,"" Graham breathed, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. ""Lydia doesn't come from money. She was an archivist when I met her! She worked in a public library!""
""She wasn't an archivist, Mr. Mercer,"" Marcus said quietly, picking up his briefcase. ""Her grandfather founded Vesper Logistics before the municipal crash in the nineties. She inherited the entire portfolio when she turned twenty-five—six months before you met her.""
Graham felt the room tilt on its axis.
All those times he had patronized her quiet demeanor, all those times he had complained about her spending habits while secretly using her family’s underlying capital reserves to back his risky real estate leveraged buyouts, all those times his mother had dismissed her as a charity case...
They hadn't just married into wealth.
They had been squatting in a mansion owned by the woman they were now trying to throw into the street.
""Call her,"" Graham choked out, grabbing his phone with trembling fingers. ""Get her on the phone right now.""
""I tried,"" Marcus said, pausing at the boardroom door. ""Her legal counsel already froze all corporate accounts, initiated an audit of your personal expenditures, and filed an emergency injunction against the Mercer estate.""
