I Spent One Night With My Billionaire Boss To Escape My Cheating Fiancé—Then Discovered He Was The City’s Most Feared Mafia Kingpin

Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

Chapter 4 illustration

The drive back to the Lake Geneva estate was wrapped in the quiet, reverent silence of a battlefield after the smoke has cleared.

The rain had finally ceased, replaced by a blanket of thick, damp fog that clung to the dark Wisconsin pines. Inside the warm cabin of the armored Maybach, the only illumination was the soft blue ambient glow of the dashboard displays and the occasional flash of a security terminal verifying our passage through the outer perimeter gates.

I sat back against the leather seat, my head resting against the headrest, feeling the profound, exhausting release of three years of accumulated tension draining out of my veins. My hands, which had been clenched into defensive fists since midnight yesterday, finally unclenched.

Beside me, Marello sat with his overcoat unbuttoned, his tie loosened at his throat, watching me in the dim light with an intensity that made the air inside the vehicle feel thick and charged.

"Niko reports that the federal strike force arrested fourteen members of the Romano leadership on site," Marello said softly, breaking the silence. "Enzo Romano was booked on federal racketeering, extortion, and interstate weapons trafficking without bail. And Ryan Vance has been transferred to the federal detention facility downtown, facing twenty-five years for aggravated corporate forgery and bank fraud."

I closed my eyes, letting the finality of the names wash over me. "He will never see the outside of a prison wall before he is sixty years old."

"He will never exist in your world again, Alba," Marello murmured, his voice dropping into a low, velvet timbre that sent a deep shiver straight through my spine. "His name, his debts, and his shadow have been permanently burned away."

The vehicle came to a smooth halt beneath the grand stone portico of the mansion. Marello stepped out, walked around the rear of the car, and opened my door himself, extending a massive, warm hand to help me down onto the gravel.

He didn't release my hand once my feet touched the ground. He led me through the grand foyer, past the sleeping portraits of his ancestors, and guided me into his private second-floor library.

A massive stone hearth was roaring with dry birch logs, casting dancing orange shadows across the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, the leather chesterfield sofas, and the antique Persian rugs. On a silver tray near the fire sat two crystal snifters of vintage port wine and a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

Marello walked over to the fire, removed his heavy jacket, and draped it across the back of an armchair. He turned to face me, his silhouette framed by the leaping flames, his white shirt glowing in the firelight.

"Why didn't you run, Alba?" he asked quietly, his hazel eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding, piercing hunger. "When you realized what I was... when you discovered that the man who signs your paychecks is the head of the Santoro Syndicate... why didn't you take that silver token, board a flight to Europe, and leave me to fight my own wars?"

I walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping two feet from where he stood. The heat of the fire warmed the side of my face, but the heat radiating from Marello was infinitely more dangerous.

"Because for three years, Marello, you were the only person in this city who never lied to me," I answered, my voice steady, clear, and fearless. "Ryan promised me love, but he saw me as a financial shield. My former friends saw me as a contact to access your corporate invitations. But you... every time you gave me an order, every time you asked me to protect a schedule, you treated me as an equal partner. You protected my mother before I even had the courage to ask. You walked into an armed warehouse tonight not to protect your logistics contracts, but to ensure that I would never have to live in fear again."

Marello stepped closer, his broad chest rising and falling in heavy, measured breaths. He reached up, his rough fingers tracing the curve of my jawline, tilting my chin upward so that I had no choice but to drown in the dark depths of his gaze.

"I didn't walk into that warehouse to protect an employee, Alba," Marello whispered, his thumb brushing lightly across my lower lip, sending an electric jolt straight to the core of my being. "Three years ago, you walked into my corporate office wearing an oversized gray suit, carrying a worn leather binder, and looked at me as though I were just another executive who needed his morning organized. You had fire. You had an unshakeable, stubborn dignity that refused to bow to my wealth."

His hand slid into the hair at the nape of my neck, pulling me gently against the hard, unyielding wall of his chest.

"I spent thirty-six months watching you from behind my desk, holding my breath every time your perfume drifted into the boardroom, forcing myself to maintain a professional wall because I believed you deserved a safe, ordinary life with an ordinary man," he continued, his voice trembling with raw, long-repressed passion. "I cursed myself every time I saw that engagement ring on your hand. But when you came to my tower last night, bleeding and broken by that coward... the beast inside me broke its chains. I am not an ordinary man, Alba. I am a monster who rules in the dark. But if you stay with me, I will lay the entire city at your feet."

My breath hitched in my throat. I looked at the dark, lethal, beautiful man holding me in his arms, and I realized that the safe, ordinary life I had chased was nothing more than an illusion designed for cowards.

I didn't want the quiet safety of a cage. I wanted the fire.

I reached up, wrapping both of my arms around his neck, sinking my fingers into his thick, dark hair.

"Then rule it with me, Marello," I whispered against his lips.

Marello let out a low, ragged groan, pulling me into a fierce, consuming kiss that obliterated every lingering shadow of the past. His lips were demanding, possessive, and wildly intoxicating, sweeping away the cold rain, the fear, and the betrayal in a single, devastating blaze of heat. He lifted me effortlessly off the floor, carrying me toward the velvet sofa near the hearth, leaving the ruins of my old life behind in the ashes of the fire.
