I Spent One Night With My Billionaire Boss To Escape My Cheating Fiancé—Then Discovered He Was The City’s Most Feared Mafia Kingpin

Chapter 3 - The Counter-Ambush At 47th Street

Chapter 3 illustration

The midnight air along the industrial corridor of 47th Street smelled of sulfur, rusted iron, and the sluggish, polluted waters of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. A dense river fog rolled between the corrugated metal warehouses, swallowing the yellow sodium streetlights and casting jagged, monstrous shadows across the cracked concrete loading bays.

Inside an abandoned freight storage facility that served as the primary operations hub for the Romano Syndicate, the scene was one of frantic, sweating desperation.

Ryan Vance sat chained to a folding metal chair beneath a bare sixty-watt lightbulb, his face bruised and swollen, his expensive dress shirt ripped down the front and caked with dried blood. Standing over him was Enzo Romano, a thuggish, broad-shouldered man in his late forties wearing an unbuttoned leather jacket, holding a heavy steel pipe in one hand and a glowing laptop in the other.

"You promised me the root keys by midnight, you miserable little worm!" Enzo roared, slamming the pipe against the edge of the metal desk, sending sparks flying into the dark. "The federal banking transfer failed! The terminal is demanding a hardware token verification! Where is the coin?!"

"I don't know, Enzo! I swear to God I don't know!" Ryan wailed, sobbing like a terrified child, his teeth chattering against each other. "Alba always carried her personal keys in her purse! She must have it with her! Call her! Tell her I'm going to die if she doesn't bring it to you! She’s weak, she’s sentimental, she’ll do anything to save my life!"

"She won't be doing anything of the sort, Ryan."

A woman’s voice cut through the cavernous warehouse like an executioner's blade.

Enzo Romano spun around, his hand flying to the heavy revolver tucked into his waistband. Six armed thugs stationed along the catwalks raised their weapons in unison, training their laser sights on the heavy steel roll-up door at the rear of the loading dock.

The steel door was already open.

Stepping through the thick river fog, illuminated by the cold white beams of three idling armored tactical trucks, was Marello Santoro.

He wore no body armor. He wore a tailored, floor-length midnight-wool coat over an open-collared black silk shirt, his hands resting casually inside his pockets, his ebony hair damp with river mist. Flanking him on either side were twenty heavily armed operators from the Santoro Syndicate, dressed in sterile, unmarked black tactical gear, their suppressed carbines held at the low-ready position with clinical, military discipline.

And walking half a step to Marello’s right, completely unbothered by the drawn weapons, was me.

I wore an elegant charcoal trench coat, my hair pulled back into a sleek, severe ponytail, holding a small silver Roman coin loosely between my gloved fingers.

"Santoro," Enzo Romano sneered, though his voice wavered with an unmistakable undercurrent of raw panic as he took in the sheer firepower filling the room. "You brought a dozen soldiers to a private negotiation? Are you that terrified of a family dispute?"

"This is not a negotiation, Enzo," Marello said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating off the corrugated metal walls like a death sentence. "A negotiation requires two equal parties who possess leverage. You possess a terrified, bankrupt mortgage broker who couldn't balance a ledger without committing forgery. I possess the police commissioner, the federal prosecutor’s office, and every port authority between here and Montreal."

Ryan’s head snapped toward me, his bloodshot eyes widening in desperate, pathetic disbelief. "Alba! Oh God, Alba, baby, you came! You brought the token! Give it to them! Please, tell Mr. Santoro to wire them the clearance codes so they let me go! We can start over, Alba! We can fix this!"

I walked forward three steps, stopping beside Marello, looking down at the man I had promised to marry with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

"There is no starting over, Ryan," I said, my voice steady, clear, and devoid of a single drop of pity. "You stole my mother’s healthcare savings. You forged my name on federal fraud documents. You tried to sell my life to violent criminals to pay for your card games. You called me weak. You called me sentimental."

I raised the silver coin, letting the yellow lightbulb reflect off its ancient, stamped metal face.

"You wanted the token, Enzo?" I asked, turning my gaze to the Romano boss.

Enzo’s eyes darted toward the coin, his hand trembling on the grip of his revolver. "Toss it over. And Santoro walks out of here alive."

Marello let out a low, dark chuckle that sounded like dry river stones grinding beneath an iron boot.

"He doesn't understand yet, does he, Alba?" Marello murmured, turning his head slightly toward me.

"No," I replied, a cold, predatory smile spreading across my lips. "He doesn't."

I flipped the silver coin into the air.

It spun through the dim light, catching the shadows, before landing with a sharp, metallic *clink* on the concrete floor between our groups.

The moment the coin struck the concrete, a tiny, high-frequency radio frequency burst transmitted from its internal circuit, completing a wireless cryptographic handshake with the cellular terminal in my trench coat pocket.

Across the city of Chicago, sixty miles of private telecommunications fiber activated simultaneously.

"That wasn't a banking key, Enzo," I said, watching the realization dawn on his face like a cold bucket of water. "That was an automated forensic broadcast beacon. As of five seconds ago, the unedited, certified audio recordings of Ryan Vance confessing to the forgery, alongside your family’s offshore bank routing logs and satellite coordinates for this warehouse, were uploaded directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Organized Crime Strike Force."

Right on cue, the night outside the warehouse exploded into a blinding kaleidoscope of synchronized red, blue, and amber strobe lights.

The deafening, concussive wail of three dozen federal and municipal sirens tore through the fog, accompanied by the thundering, low-altitude roar of two FBI tactical helicopters hovering directly above the sheet-metal roof.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads!" a voice boomed through an external loudspeaker, vibrating the concrete beneath our feet.

Enzo Romano went completely white. "You set us up... you brought the feds to a mob war?!"

"I am a legitimate logistics executive, Enzo," Marello replied with cold, mocking arrogance, stepping back into the shadows of the loading dock as his men formed an impenetrable phalanx around us. "I don't need to get my hands dirty with street vermin when the justice system is so eager to clean my floor for free."

Marello reached out, took my gloved hand firmly in his, and began leading me toward our armored vehicle.

"Alba! Don't leave me!" Ryan screamed behind us, sobbing and thrashing against his metal chair as tactical flashbang grenades shattered the upper windows in a blinding storm of white light and thunder. "Alba! I'm your fiancé! You promised before God! Alba!"

I didn't turn around. I didn't flinch. I kept my hand locked in Marello’s grip, stepping into the warm, leather interior of the Maybach as the federal tactical teams breached the warehouse doors, bringing down the curtain on Ryan Vance’s miserable, treacherous life forever.
