I Spent One Night With My Billionaire Boss To Escape My Cheating Fiancé—Then Discovered He Was The City’s Most Feared Mafia Kingpin

Chapter 1 - The Red Ink On The Marble Floor

Chapter 1 illustration

The rain lashed violently against the sixty-story glass tower of Santoro Enterprises in downtown Chicago, turning the city skyline into a blurry smudge of charcoal and red brake lights. Inside the penthouse office on the sixty-second floor, the silence was absolute, thick, and suffocating.

I stood beside the mahogany executive desk, my fingers trembling so violently that the bone-china saucer rattled against the cup of black espresso I had prepared at precisely eight-fifteen, just as I had done every single weekday for the past thirty-six months. But today, my beige silk blouse was torn at the collar, my hair was a tangled disaster from running through the sleet without a coat, and my knuckles were scraped raw.

Across the expanse of hand-scraped dark oak floorboards stood Marello Santoro.

At thirty-four, my boss was an apex predator disguised in a three-thousand-dollar bespoke charcoal suit. He stood six-foot-three, broad-shouldered, with thick obsidian hair swept back from a sharp, aristocratic jawline and cold, calculating hazel eyes that could reduce seasoned Wall Street corporate raiders to stuttering wrecks. For three years, I had believed Marello was simply an extraordinarily demanding, reclusive billionaire who controlled the Midwest’s largest logistics, cold-storage, and maritime shipping enterprise. I thought his obsession with encrypted server arrays, private satellite uplinks, and armed corporate security teams was merely the eccentric paranoia of an ultra-wealthy industrialist.

I had been blind. Completely, dangerously blind.

"Drink the espresso, Alba," Marello commanded, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet like a low rumble of thunder before a strike. "Your blood pressure is bottoming out, your pupils are dilated, and you are vibrating like an exposed copper wire."

I didn't reach for the cup. I kept my back pressed against the leather executive chair, my breath catching in my chest.

"Nine minutes, Marello," I whispered, the words tasting like bitter bile on my tongue. "You told your head of security that nine minutes is how long it takes for a tactical hit squad to breach this floor if they already possess the private elevator codes. That wasn't a corporate security drill you were discussing on the phone. Those men downstairs in the loading dock aren't night watchmen. They’re carrying submachine guns."

Marello did not flinch. He slowly set down his platinum fountain pen, turned his massive frame toward me, and stepped around the edge of the desk. Every step he took radiated effortless, lethal grace—the unhurried walk of a man who had never once in his life feared another living soul.

"The corporate world calls it supply chain dominance, Alba," Marello said smoothly, stopping three feet from where I stood. The scent of his cedarwood aftershave, expensive tobacco, and rain enveloped my senses. "The street calls it the Santoro Syndicate. I control the port terminals along Lake Michigan, the freight rail corridors connecting this city to the eastern seaboard, and seventy percent of the private warehousing in Cook County. Santoro Logistics is merely the clean, polished glass window of an ancient, unyielding machine. And right now, a cowardly, degenerate little parasite has attempted to drive a wedge into that machine using your name as a crowbar."

"Ryan," I breathed, the sheer weight of the betrayal threatening to buckle my knees.

"Your former fiancé," Marello corrected, his jaw tightening into rigid granite.

Just ten hours ago, my life had been normal. Modest, structured, and safe. I had left the office early with a box of artisanal pastries, eager to surprise Ryan Vance, my fiancé of two years, with the news that my mother’s specialized memory-care facility had approved our financing plan. Instead, I had walked into our Lincoln Park apartment to find our master closet torn apart. The floor had been littered with shredded bank statements, unpaid collections notices, and empty bourbon bottles.

When I demanded an explanation, Ryan had broken down into hysterical, pathetic sobs. He confessed that his boutique mortgage brokerage had been a hollow shell for eight months. He hadn't just lost our joint wedding fund—he had lost six hundred thousand dollars at high-stakes offshore poker tables. Desperate to avoid a broken kneecap, Ryan had borrowed money from an underground predatory lending syndicate known as the Romano Family.

And when the Romanos demanded collateral, Ryan had handed them my life.

He had forged my signature on fraudulent commercial surety bonds, used my executive credentials as the Executive Assistant to Marello Santoro to access our corporate freight schedules, and promised the Romanos that he could deliver the digital security encryption keys to Marello’s private shipping manifests in exchange for wiping his personal debt clean.

When I screamed that I was calling the police, Ryan’s cowardly facade had vanished. He had grabbed me by the throat, shoved me violently against the hallway console, and tried to pry my corporate security passcard from my blazer pocket. I had fought him off with a heavy bronze vase, scrambled out into the freezing midnight rain, and fled to the only place in the city where high walls and armed guards existed: Santoro Tower.

I had thrown myself into Marello’s private executive suite at two in the morning, weeping, shivering, and begging for protection. Marello had locked the doors, ordered dry clothes, and poured me scotch. And in the dark of that private suite, amid the roaring adrenaline of survival, the invisible, burning tension that had simmered between us for three professional years had detonated into an all-consuming, desperate wildfire.

I had given myself to my billionaire boss on the velvet sofa of his private quarters, believing I was escaping into the arms of a decent, powerful protector.

I had woken up at dawn to hear him calmly ordering his security chief to put two bullets into a courier who had compromised our loading docks.

"The Romanos are not lenders, Alba," Marello said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on my arms stand up. "They are rabid street dogs who scavenge for scraps along the edges of my territory. When Ryan gave them your name, he didn't just hand them a debt guarantor. He gave them the master key to my schedule, my routes, and the only person who holds the administrative passwords to my private holding companies."

"I am just an assistant, Marello!" I cried, tears of pure terror finally escaping down my cheeks. "I order your coffee! I coordinate your travel! You could hire three Harvard MBAs by lunchtime to replace me!"

Marello closed the distance between us in a single stride. His large, rough hand reached out, his long fingers gently cupping the side of my trembling neck. His thumb swept across my cheekbone, wiping away a hot tear with a touch that was shockingly, devastatingly tender.

"I have employed thousands of people over the last ten years, Alba," Marello murmured, his hazel eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made my heart hammer against my ribs. "I have trusted none of them. But for three years, you have stood beside my desk. You have guarded my calendar, protected my secrets, and looked at me as a man rather than a balance sheet or a gun. You are not a replaceable assistant. You are the only clean thing left in my world. And no two-bit gambling addict or Romano gutter-rat will ever lay a finger on you again."

Before I could breathe, the heavy oak doors of the office swung inward.

Niko Ferraro, Marello’s head of security, stepped into the room with an assault rifle slung across his chest. His face was carved from gray stone.

"Boss," Niko announced, checking his tactical wristwatch. "The Romanos just blew through the gate at Alba's apartment building. They found the decoy car. They know she’s with you."

Marello slowly pulled his hand away from my neck, turning toward the window as his expression hardened into pure, terrifying diamond.

"Mobilize the convoy," Marello ordered softly. "We are moving her to the estate. And tell our men in the South Side that the hunting season on the Romano family is officially open."
