The Whitaker Orchard Legacy
Chapter 5 - The Open House Ambush
Saturday afternoon arrived with crisp, autumn clarity, the kind of perfect Hudson Valley day that brought city buyers driving up Route 9 in sleek foreign cars.
Whitaker Orchard was buzzing with activity.
A large professional sign reading FUTURE SITE OF WHITAKER ESTATES LUXURY SUBDIVISION stood near the front entrance, while three gleaming SUVs were parked along the gravel driveway.
Brooke stood on the wraparound porch of the farmhouse, wearing an expensive tweed blazer, gesturing expansively to a group of prospective buyers holding champagne flutes.
""As you can see, the historic structures will be completely redeveloped into high-end residential pods,"" Brooke was explaining smoothly as I walked up the driveway, carrying a manila folder beneath my arm.
Daniel spotted me first from the edge of the lawn, his face instantly draining of color as he jogged across the grass to intercept me.
""Mom? What are you doing here?"" Daniel demanded, his voice pitching upward in panic. ""The open house is for registered investors only—you can't just show up here uninvited!""
""It's my property, Daniel,"" I said calmly, walking past him toward the porch. ""I have every right to inspect the premises.""
Brooke turned around, her expression hardening into a mask of furious embarrassment as she saw the investors staring at us.
""Charlotte, security was instructed not to let you past the gate,"" Brooke hissed, stepping down the steps to block my path. ""We gave you a stipend for the guesthouse in Troy. Take your bags and go back where you belong.""
Before I could answer, a sleek black sedan pulled up behind the real estate agent's SUV, and Marcus Vance stepped out from the passenger side, carrying a heavy briefcase, flanked by two municipal court bailiffs and a county sheriff's deputy.
