The Syndicate Tried Contesting My Grandfather's Land Trust—Until My Forensic Audit Seized Their Offshore Stables At Sunrise!
Chapter 4 - The Paperwork Trap
"Step back, Mr. Sterling," the first agent commanded, his voice leaving zero room for negotiation.
Julian spun around, staring wildly at the team of attorneys who had accompanied him.
"Edward! File the emergency habeas petition!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "Call Judge Vance! Tell him the feds are raiding private estate grounds without notice!"
The lead attorney, Edward, pulled his silk scarf tight around his neck and took another step back toward the gravel drive.
"Julian," Edward said, his voice trembling. "The firm cannot represent you on federal wire fraud and subsidy embezzlement. We're withdrawing our appearance on the state stay effective immediately."
"You coward!" Julian roared, spit flying from his lips. "I pay your seven-figure retainer!"
"Not anymore," Arthur said, tapping his tablet screen. "The Department of Justice filed an emergency freeze on all Sterling Apex operating capital at 6:15 p.m. Every retainer account in your name has been seized."
Julian’s knees visibly trembled. He grabbed the side mirror of the lead Lincoln to steady his frame.
"Marcus... listen to me," Julian rasped, looking at me with pure, desperate pleading. "We can settle this. I’ll withdraw the appellate stay! I’ll release the High Valley deed to your trust permanently! Just tell Miller this was an internal accounting error!"
"You wanted to put Atlas in the mud, Julian," I said, walking slowly toward him. "You brought chains to my grandfather’s barn."
"It was business!" Julian yelled, tears of humiliation finally leaking down his cheeks. "It was just business!"
"No," I replied, stopping two feet from his trembling chest. "It was theft. And this is the audit."
Agent Miller didn't wait any longer. He stepped behind Julian, pulled his arms backward, and clicked a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Click. Snap.
The metallic sound echoed across the silent polo fields like a final gunshot.
"Julian Sterling, you're under arrest for wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States government, and aggravated money laundering," Miller recited mechanically.
Two agents took Julian by the elbows, marching him down the gravel drive toward the rear of the second helicopter.
His shoes dragged in the wet turf, leaving deep, ugly scars across the very lawn he had claimed to own an hour ago.
The three attorneys scrambled into the remaining SUVs, speeding out through the stone gates without looking back, their red taillights disappearing into the dark valley mist.
Arthur walked down the steps, handing me a freshly printed title document stamped with a new federal release code.
"The appellate stay is officially vacated, Marcus," Arthur said with a quiet, satisfied smile. "The federal court has recognized Apex Meridian Trust as the sole, unencumbered owner of High Valley."
"And the horses?" I asked, looking back at the barns.
"Every horse formerly held by the Sterling syndicate has been transferred into your conservatorship," Arthur answered.
Then, from inside the dark front passenger seat of the lead Lincoln SUV that Julian had left running, a mounted police radio began to hiss with rapid, urgent static.
