The Red Envelope
Chapter 6 - The Audit of Betrayal
Before Vanessa could answer, the bedroom door swung wider, and a small, pink-pajama-clad figure stepped cautiously into the room.
Sophie clutched her red magnifying glass to her chest, looking up at the two adults with serious, wide eyes.
""Is the case closed, Uncle Dante?"" she asked.
Dante looked down at the little girl, the dark, suffocating fury in his chest suddenly parting to reveal a strange, grounding clarity.
He reached down, gently lifting Sophie so she wouldn't have to look up at the wreckage of a broken deception.
""Yes, detective,"" Dante said softly, resting one hand against her back. ""The case is closed.""
He turned his gaze back to Vanessa, who was gripping the edge of the dresser with white-knuckled intensity.
""My security team will escort you off the property in five minutes,"" Dante said, his voice absolute. ""If you take one step back inside city limits, federal handlers won't be able to save you from what I leave behind.""
Vanessa opened her mouth as if to argue, but the look in Dante’s eyes told her that words had run out.
Without another syllable, she turned, grabbed her designer handbag from the nightstand, and fled down the hallway, her hurried heels clicking a frantic retreat into the rainy Chicago night.
