The Red Envelope
Chapter 5 - The Confession in the Dark
Vanessa stared at the square of white paper, and for the first time since Dante had known her, all the color drained completely from her face.
The sophisticated, untouchable facade crumbled, leaving behind the desperate pragmatism of a cornered operative.
""How did you find that?"" she whispered, her voice tightening.
""A five-year-old girl with a plastic detective hat and a magnifying glass has better surveillance skills than my entire security team,"" Dante said smoothly.
Vanessa’s eyes darted toward the open bathroom door, a sudden flash of panic crossing her features.
""You let a child—""
""She's smarter than you gave her credit for,"" Dante cut her off, closing the distance between them until he towered over her. ""She watched you play the devoted girlfriend while you used my private bathroom as a dead drop for federal handlers.""
Vanessa’s back hit the edge of the mahogany dresser.
She didn't try to run.
She knew the estate gates were locked, the guards outside answered only to Dante, and Port Mercer offered no sanctuary from a man betrayed in his own home.
""They were going to freeze my accounts, Dante,"" Vanessa hissed, her voice shaking with sudden, bitter rage. ""They had my brother in federal custody on tax evasion charges. They offered me a deal: give them your logistical schedules, and my family walks free.""
""And you decided my life was an acceptable currency to pay your debts,"" Dante said.
It wasn't a question.
It was a death sentence delivered in a whisper.
