The Price of a Smile
Chapter 8 - The Dawn of Us
The morning sun broke over Port Mercer, burning away the lingering November chill and casting a golden glow across the harbor and the sprawling stone estate.
Maeve stood on the balcony wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping fresh coffee while the ocean breeze caught her hair.
Behind her, footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of Donovan’s arms sliding around her waist.
He pressed a soft kiss to the back of her neck, lingering there as he rested his hands over their growing child.
""Are you ready?"" he asked quietly.
""For what?"" Maeve turned in his arms, looking up into his dark, steady eyes—eyes that the rest of the city feared, but which looked at her with absolute devotion.
""For everything else,"" Donovan said, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. ""The event-planning company you wanted to start. The nursery we still need to paint. And whatever else comes next.""
Maeve smiled back, feeling the baby give a gentle, reassuring kick against his palm.
She had spent months believing her life was ruined, trapped in the wreckage of a past relationship and the crushing weight of unpaid bills.
Instead, she had found her way to a love that didn't diminish her, but stood like a fortress around her.
""I'm more than ready,"" Maeve said, leaning up to kiss him.
For the first time in her life, the future didn't look like a storm waiting to break—it looked like home."
