The Price of a Smile
Chapter 4 - The Citadel on the Hill
The black town car slid through the gates of the Cliffside estate, leaving the cold rain and the claustrophobic alleys of Port Mercer far behind.
Maeve stared out the tinted window as they wound up the private drive toward the sprawling stone residence overlooking the harbor.
It was a fortress, undeniably—surrounded by iron fencing, security cameras, and discreet guards stationed at strategic intervals.
Yet, as Donovan led her inside into a soaring foyer lit by a warm crystal chandelier, the heavy opulence felt less like a prison and more like a sanctuary.
""You can have any room you want prepared,"" Donovan said, walking with her toward a massive, sunlit suite overlooking the churning gray ocean. ""Or we can redesign this entire wing. Whatever makes you feel safe.""
Maeve walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the waves crash against the rocks far below.
""It's big,"" she said quietly. ""Too big for just me.""
""It's not just you,"" Donovan corrected, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his palms over their child. ""It's us. If you'll let it be.""
Maeve leaned back against him, closing her eyes as the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat grounded her.
She knew this world wouldn't be easy, and Derek’s petty cruelty in the coffee shop was likely only the prologue to the judgment Port Mercer would pass on them.
Yet, standing here with the man the entire city feared holding her as if she were the most precious thing on earth, she felt an unfamiliar emotion take root.
Certainty.
