The Map Drawn on a Grocery Receipt
Chapter 3 - A place on the map
May needed help maintaining Arthur's former plot. Tess had no garden experience, but she could come on Sundays. Arthur offered advice from a chair beneath the tree, sometimes contradicting himself and laughing when May corrected him.
They grew lettuce badly and beans well. Tess brought vegetables to the shop staff, who began saving damaged produce boxes for the allotment.
When winter arrived, Arthur gave her a notebook of planting dates. On its first page was another map, carefully copied from the receipt. He added a fourth landmark: Tess's crooked rows.
"So I know which ones to criticize," he said.
The receipt stayed in her purse until the pencil faded. Tess then copied it into the notebook. What she inherited was neither ownership nor a fortune. It was a route to people who expected her, a piece of ground she could learn to care for, and enough apples to share.
