The Map Drawn on a Grocery Receipt
Chapter 1 - A route in pencil
An older customer forgot a grocery receipt on Tess's counter. On its back, someone had drawn a map with three landmarks: a red gate, a crooked tree and a small bridge. Beside it was a time, four o'clock.
Tess put it in lost property. The next day the customer returned, anxious. She gave him the receipt, and he asked whether she knew the old footpath behind the railway.
He had promised to meet a friend there but could no longer remember which turn to take. Tess finished her shift at three. With his permission, she offered to walk as far as the bridge.
