The Heir of the Shadows
Chapter 6 - Shadows and Sanctuary
The transition from our cramped second-floor apartment to the seventy-third-floor penthouse of Hale Tower was nothing short of surreal. Movers in crisp uniforms hauled our modest belongings—the thrift-store sofa, Nora’s wooden blocks, and the stack of linguistics textbooks I had spent years collecting—into a sprawling space of glass, steel, and minimalist luxury that felt more like a modern art gallery than a home. Yet, despite the panoramic views of Puget Sound and the private elevator that opened directly into our foyer, Liam made sure the penthouse never lost its warmth. He set up a dedicated art station for Nora by the floor-to-ceiling windows and cleared a massive oak desk in the corner study specifically for my dissertation research.
Yet, corporate empires do not rebuild themselves without friction. Three days after our move, a secure courier dropped an unmarked manila envelope onto Liam’s desk, containing an anonymous warning note printed on cheap office paper: The board hasn't forgotten the transition of power. Retract the community trust fund by Friday, or the residential leases will face a federal audit. Liam stood by the window, reading the note with an expression of cold calculation while I sorted through the financial manifests he had brought home from the downtown office. ""It's Arthur's old faction within the junior executive circle,"" Liam said, his voice dropping an octave as he tossed the paper into the shredder. ""They think they can use bureaucratic intimidation to claw back the community grants.""
""They're testing your resolve,"" I said, looking up from the tax ledgers with a sharp, analytical eye. ""They want to see if the man who lived in an alley for six months has lost his appetite for a corporate knife-fight."" Liam turned from the glass, a slow, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. ""They're about to find out that the alley only made me sharper."" He walked over to the desk, leaning down beside me as we began cross-referencing the bank routing numbers from the anonymous courier against the internal payroll accounts of Hale Investments. By midnight, we had traced the leak directly to a vice president of compliance who had been skimming funds from the subsidiary accounts for years—giving us all the leverage we needed for a clean, permanent sweep of the remaining corruption.
