The Heir of the Shadows
Chapter 4 - Reclaiming the Crown
The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the hum of the centralized air conditioning and the distant rumble of downtown traffic seventy floors below. Richard Hale’s face drained of color, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as he stared at the nephew he thought he had successfully buried in a rainy Seattle alley. "" Liam..."" Richard choked out, taking a panicked step backward against the floor-to-ceiling windows. ""That's impossible. The reports said..."" ""The reports were intentionally exaggerated by your accountants,"" Liam interrupted, his voice ringing with cold, absolute authority as he walked slowly toward the head of the table.
Two of the corporate security guards rushed through the side doors, their hands hovering over their holstered sidearms, but Liam didn't even bother to look back. ""Stand down, Miller,"" Liam commanded the lead guard without breaking stride. ""Unless you want your pension revoked before the market opens tomorrow."" Miller hesitated, looking between Richard’s panicked expression and Liam’s unshakeable composure, before slowly stepping back and lowering his hands. The other board members began shifting uncomfortably in their ergonomic chairs, their allegiance shifting the moment they realized the true heir was standing alive and breathing in front of them.
I stood near the doorway, watching Liam dismantle his uncle’s empire with the surgical precision of a master chess player. He reached into his breast pocket and tossed a heavy leather-bound ledger onto the mahogany table—the original founding charter bearing his grandfather’s signature, which invalidated every single liquidation vote the board had attempted over the past six months. ""You stole from the residential trusts, you falsified safety inspections to justify demolition, and you attempted corporate murder,"" Liam said, his gray eyes locking onto Richard with a terrifying intensity. ""You have until five o'clock to clear your office, Uncle, or I'll hand these files directly to the federal prosecutor's office.""
Richard slumped into the executive leather chair, defeated and broken, realizing that his grand coup had completely collapsed under the weight of truth and persistence. The other board members immediately began murmuring among themselves, standing up one by one to offer trembling handshakes to the returning CEO, eager to distance themselves from Richard's criminal enterprise. Liam accepted their gestures with cold indifference, his gaze finally shifting away from the board and locking onto me across the sunlit room. The storm had passed, the empire was restored, but as I stood there in the shadow of Hale Tower, I knew our lives would never be the same again.
