The Ferry Ticket Nobody Used
Chapter 3 - A ticket for tomorrow
The ferry resumed at nine. Iris chose to spend two days at the cottage, taking only what she could carry and photographing the rest. Paul sent his message: I was hurt, and I handled it badly. May I come home and talk?
His daughter answered before boarding began. Iris looked away while he read it.
On the island, they parted beside the bus stop. Paul gave Iris the number of a neighbor who could help with the cottage's stuck windows. She gave him the spare phone charger he had borrowed, telling him to return it another day.
The cottage was quiet, but not empty. Iris opened the wardrobe, found a blue cardigan and sat on the bed until she could move again. Then she opened the window.
Weeks later she sold the property. She kept the unused ticket from the stormy evening inside her mother's photograph album. It reminded her that postponing a journey was sometimes how she finally completed it.
