Chapter 2 - Two unfinished journeys
His name was Paul. He was returning to the island after an argument with his daughter. He had left dramatically, expecting her to call. She had not. Now he feared returning would make his anger look foolish.
Iris said foolish was better than permanent. Then she told him about the cottage. She had delayed the sale because opening her mother's wardrobe felt harder than signing documents.
Paul offered advice, caught himself and asked whether she wanted it. She said no. He nodded. They watched the rain.
Later Iris called the estate agent to postpone the appointment. Paul wrote a message to his daughter without sending it. They agreed to read it in the morning, when tiredness was no longer pretending to be certainty.
