Shadows of the Estate
Chapter 7 - The Midnight Ambush
The emergency board meeting was scheduled for high noon, but the true battle began at midnight in the subterranean parking garage beneath my own penthouse. I had just dismissed Dominic to coordinate perimeter security when the overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently and died, plunging the vast concrete expanse into absolute darkness. My hand instantly dropped to the suppressed sidearm holstered beneath my coat as the screech of tires echoed off the reinforced concrete pillars. A sleek black sedan rounded the corner at breakneck speed, its high beams blinding me as it roared directly toward my position.
I dove behind a concrete structural pillar just as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the drywall behind me, sending white dust and concrete shrapnel raining down onto my shoulders. The syndicate loyalists still loyal to my father hadn't waited for the board meeting; they had decided to preemptively prune the new leadership before the evidence ever reached the council table. I drew my weapon, rolling smoothly out from behind the pillar as two armed operatives in tactical gear spilled out of the stalled sedan, sweeping their submachine guns across the dark sector. I fired twice, dropping the lead shooter with precise center-mass shots while the second assailant scrambled behind a parked SUV for cover.
""You're making a mistake, Alessandro!"" a familiar voice shouted from behind the barricade—it was Victor, my father’s longtime head of internal security. ""The old man owns this city! You can't rewrite history with a box of old papers!"" I advanced methodically, utilizing the shadows and architectural angles to maintain tactical superiority while conserving my ammunition. ""History is already written, Victor—you're just trying to burn the book before anyone reads the final chapter,"" I called back, my voice cutting cleanly through the echoing emptiness of the garage. I feigned a lunge to the left, drawing his fire, then flanked right, kicking his weapon across the pavement before slamming him against the cold concrete pillar with enough force to knock the breath entirely from his lungs. As Victor slumped unconscious to the floor, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket with a text message from Dominic: The federal wiretaps we planted on the old man's personal comms just intercepted a call to the harbor master. He's chartering a private freighter for international waters tonight.
