Shadows of the Estate
Chapter 1 - The Weight of Whispers
The silence in the abandoned shed felt heavier than the dust motes dancing in the slanted afternoon light. I stared at the folded piece of stationery in my hands, my thumb tracing the familiar, elegant loops of my mother’s handwriting. For thirty-one years, the official narrative of her death had been an unalterable stone in my mind: a tragic late-night carriage accident on the rain-slicked mountain road outside our ancestral home, her body recovered by local authorities before I was even old enough to understand what permanent absence meant. My father had closed ranks, mourning in a cold, austere silence that eventually hardened into the iron-fisted discipline he used to forge me into the head of a syndicate.
Yet here, hidden beneath a rotting floorboard in a forgotten corner of the very estate my father built, lay proof that everything I had been told was a carefully constructed lie. I carefully unfolded the thick paper, my eyes scanning the ink dated just three weeks before her supposed accident. Marcus, the salutation read, written in a tone of desperate urgency I had never heard directed at anyone in our household. If you receive this, the arrangements are set. I cannot live another day under his surveillance, but I cannot take Alessandro without risking his life. Keep him safe from a distance. My breath caught in my throat, a cold shock radiating from my chest outward as the implications settled in. She hadn’t died in an accident. She had planned to leave, or perhaps she had been silenced for trying.
Sophia sat cross-legged on a dusty crate beside me, swinging her small feet and humming softly to herself, entirely unaware of the tectonic shift happening inside my mind. I folded the letter with meticulous care, sliding it back into the shoebox alongside the yellowing photographs of a dark-haired boy who looked astonishingly like me, yet possessed a smile I had never worn in my life. ""Sophia,"" I said, my voice unnervingly calm despite the storm raging beneath my skin. ""Did anyone else ever come out here with you?"" She shook her head, her bright eyes wide and innocent. ""Just me. I found the loose board when I was hiding from mommy.""
I nodded slowly, rising to my feet while concealing the shoebox beneath my heavy wool coat. If Elina, my quiet and seemingly unassuming housekeeper, had no idea this box was here, then the secret had been buried long before she was ever hired. That meant someone with deep historical ties to this property—someone who knew every hidden nook of the east courtyard—had stashed it here decades ago. I took Sophia’s tiny, cold hand, leading her out of the shed and locking the rotting wooden door behind us with a silent vow. The empire I ruled was built on fear, loyalty, and absolute control, but tonight, the foundation of my entire existence had cracked wide open, and I was going to find out who pulled the trigger thirty-one years ago.
