"Never Touch Me In Public," The Mafia Boss Warned—Until He Found Her In Another Man's Arms And Unleashed Pure Chaos!

Chapter 4 - The Collision

Chapter 4 illustration

The gentle rhythm of the acoustic guitar was suddenly drowned out by the harsh, violent squeal of heavy tires on wet timber.

Two black armored SUVs burst onto the pier, their high-beam xenon headlights cutting through the festive string lights with blinding, surgical brilliance. The trucks slid to a halt, blocking the only access ramp back to Harbor Street, their heavy steel bumpers groaning against the wooden pylons.

Screams erupted from the deckhands and their wives as eight men in black tactical jackets jumped out of the vehicles, brandishing automatic carbines, forming an iron perimeter around the pavilion.

"Nobody move!" Marco’s voice barked over the terrified gasps of the crowd. "Keep your hands visible and stay against the railing!"

Serena’s entire body went cold. The glass of cider slipped from her fingers, shattering against the decking, the golden liquid splashing over her bare feet.

She knew that posture. She knew that formation.

The rear passenger door of the lead SUV opened.

Roman Duca stepped out into the harsh glare of the headlights.

He wore a tailored charcoal wool coat over an unbuttoned black shirt. He didn't have a weapon in his hand; he didn't need one. His presence alone sucked the air straight out of the seaside pavilion. His jaw was set in that rigid, lethal tension she had studied for six years, his dark eyes locked entirely on her with an intensity that felt like a physical blow.

"Roman," Serena breathed, the name tasting like poison on her lips.

Beside her, Julian didn't run. He didn't ask questions.

The moment the armed men surrounded the deck, Julian reacted with the instant, tactical instinct of a veteran naval officer. He took one long stride, stepping directly in front of Serena, his broad shoulders completely shielding her body from the headlights and from Roman’s sightline.

"Who the hell are you?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a resonant, command-grade thunder that cut across the panicked whispers of his workers. "This is private commercial property. Get your armed thugs off my pier before I call the Coast Guard."

Roman paused ten feet away.

His eyes slowly shifted from Serena’s hidden form to the man standing before her. His gaze swept over Julian’s broad frame, the rolled-up sleeves, the calloused hands, and the defiant, protective posture.

A terrible, mocking smile curved the edge of Roman’s mouth.

"Coast Guard?" Roman murmured, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward. "You think men with badges can protect you from me, captain? You don't even know whose property you've been harboring."

Roman stopped three feet from Julian. The two men stood chest-to-chest—the ruthless city predator against the rugged coastal anchor.

"Step aside," Roman whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "Before I have my men feed you to the crabs in your own harbor."

"You touch one hair on her head, and you leave this pier in a body bag," Julian replied without flinching, his fists balling into rocks at his sides, refusing to give an inch of ground.

"Julian, stop!"

Serena broke through. She grabbed Julian’s arm, stepping around him into the harsh glare of the headlights. Her heart was hammering against her ribs, but her chin was high, her emerald dress rustling in the cold sea wind.

"Let him go, Roman," Serena commanded, her voice ringing clear and steady off the water. "This has nothing to do with Julian. It has nothing to do with Vanguard. You wanted me? Here I am."

Roman’s gaze snapped to her face. For a fraction of a second, the lethal mask slipped, revealing a raw, bleeding chasm of possessive agony.

"Four months, Serena," Roman rasped, his voice trembling with an emotion that sounded terrifyingly close to tears. "Four months I tore this country apart looking for your body in rivers, in morgues, in safehouses. I thought my enemies had taken you. I thought you were dead."

He took a step toward her, his hand reaching out, his fingers shaking.

"And I find you here," Roman hissed, pointing a trembling finger toward Julian. "Smiling. Laughing. Wearing cheap linen. Letting a dockhand put his hands on your skin in front of half the town!"

"He isn't a dockhand, Roman!" Serena fired back, taking a defiant step toward the mafia kingpin, closing the distance between them until she was breathing his very air. "He is a man who looks me in the eye! He is a man who doesn't treat his wife like a dirty secret or a piece of glass he’s afraid to smudge in front of senators!"

Roman flinched as if she had slapped him across the mouth.

"I protected you!" Roman roared, his voice bouncing violently off the hull of the Sea Venture. "Every enemy I have in New York would have used you to bleed me dry! If they knew you were my weakness, they would have put a bullet in your head within forty-eight hours! That is why you couldn't touch me! That is why I kept you behind glass!"

The confession hung in the freezing salt air like an unexploded bomb.

Serena stared at him, the truth hitting her with stunning, horrifying clarity.

The rules. The distance. The cold, unyielding boundaries on balconies and in ballrooms. Roman hadn't been disgusted by her touch; he had been utterly terrified of his own vulnerability. He had convinced himself that loving her openly was a death sentence in the violent underworld he ruled.

"You idiot," Serena whispered, tears finally breaking past her lashes, hot and bitter against the cold wind. "You absolute coward. You thought you were protecting me from your monsters. But the only monster that was killing me was you."

Roman looked at her, his chest heaving, his dark eyes wide and lost.

Before he could speak, the shrill, deafening blast of a heavy marine horn echoed across the harbor.

Around the bend of the breakwater, two high-speed tactical cutters from the United States Coast Guard swept into the slipway, their blue strobe lights illuminating the pier in violent flashes, followed immediately by three state police cruisers screeching down Harbor Street with sirens wailing.

Marco sprinted toward Roman, his face pale with panic. "Boss! Federal marshals! The maritime manifest we flagged at customs was a tripwire! They traced our convoy from the turnpike! We have to move now!"

Roman didn't look at the police. He didn't look at the cutters.

His eyes stayed locked on Serena’s tear-stained face, realizing that the kingdom he had built out of fear, blood, and iron was burning down around him, and the only treasure he had ever truly wanted was standing on the other side of an insurmountable wall.
