"Never Touch Me In Public," The Mafia Boss Warned—Until He Found Her In Another Man's Arms And Unleashed Pure Chaos!

Chapter 2 - The Art of Disappearing

Chapter 2 illustration

The city looked entirely different from the plastic seat of a crosstown municipal bus.

Serena sat near the back, her face hidden beneath the pulled-down brim of a baseball cap and the oversized collar of her graduate fleece. Outside the scratched window, neon signs flickered against the damp dawn: all-night diners, auto repair garages, 24-hour laundromats.

For six years, she had traveled this city only behind three inches of reinforced ballistic glass, escorted by two chase vehicles filled with armed men who carried submachine guns beneath tailored overcoats. Now, the roar of the diesel engine rattled her teeth, and the cold draft from the front doors felt like pure, unadulterated oxygen.

By seven-fifteen, she was three counties away, stepping onto the gravel lot of a regional train depot. She paid for a one-way ticket in cash, using a five-minute window between shift changes, ensuring her face never lingered in front of the counter camera.

She had not spent six years living with the most methodical criminal mastermind on the eastern seaboard without learning how surveillance worked. Roman had taught her how to spot unmarked sedans, how wiretaps were registered through telecom sub-nodes, and how facial recognition algorithms flagged credit card pings. He thought he had been training a dutiful mob wife to stay alive; he had inadvertently trained his own most elusive fugitive.

By nightfall, she arrived in Havenport, a working-class coastal town five hundred miles north, nestled against rugged gray cliffs where the ocean crashed against granite piers.

Havenport was not a place for billionaires or high-society auctions. It smelled of brine, diesel fuel, and damp pine needles. The harbor was packed with commercial trawlers and rusted iron freight docks. It was the kind of place where people minded their own business because their own business was barely keeping their heads above water.

Using two thousand dollars of her cash, Serena rented a small, furnished apartment above an old maritime repair shop on Harbor Street. The floorboards sloped slightly toward the bay, the radiator clanked every time the heat kicked on, and the sea breeze whistled through the sash windows.

It was perfect.

Within forty-eight hours, she bought a prepaid burner phone, dyed her auburn hair an unassuming dark chestnut, and applied for an administrative position at Vanguard Maritime Logistics—a small, independent freight brokerage operating out of Pier 14.

The owner of Vanguard was a man named Julian Hayes.

Julian was thirty-six, built like an oarsman, with weathered hands, quiet amber eyes, and an easy, genuine smile that had never been bought with political favors. He was an ex-Navy engineer who had spent four years rebuilding his late father's shipping charter from near ruin. He didn't wear bespoke Italian tuxedos; he wore oiled leather boots, heavy wool sweaters, and carried the scent of salt air and cedar shavings.

When Serena handed him her application—listing her name simply as "Sarah Miller"—Julian looked over the resume with a slight, thoughtful furrow in his brow.

"Your bookkeeping and documentation protocols look like they belong at a corporate law firm in Manhattan, Miss Miller," Julian said, leaning back in his battered swivel chair, his voice a calm, warm baritone that lacked the sharp edge of violence she had grown accustomed to. "Why Havenport?"

"I needed a town with more horizon than noise," Serena replied simply, meeting his gaze without flinching.

Julian studied her for three beats. He didn't pry. He didn't ask for a portfolio of references she couldn't provide. He had the quiet discretion of a man who understood that some people came to the coast not to seek a fortune, but to put an ocean between themselves and their ghosts.

"Starting pay is twenty-two dollars an hour," Julian said, offering his hand across the scratched oak desk. "We work six days a week, and the coffee machine is older than both of us. If you can handle the drafts, you start Monday."

Serena took his hand. His grip was broad, calloused, and unhurried.

There was no tension in his shoulders. No calculating nod. Just the steady warmth of a decent human being.

"I can handle drafts," she said.

Meanwhile, five hundred miles south in the glass penthouse overlooking the skyline, the silence had turned into a hurricane.

Roman Duca stood in the center of the empty walk-in closet, his fingers clutching the empty hanger where the burgundy silk dress had hung twelve hours earlier.

Around him, six of his senior lieutenants stood in absolute, terrified silence, their eyes fixed on the hardwood floor. Marco, his head of personal security, held a tablet with trembling hands.

"Boss," Marco stammered, his throat dry. "We've run every toll booth, every private airfield, every train terminal within a two-hundred-mile radius. There are no credit card pings. Her passport is still in your safe. Her bank accounts haven't had a single dollar withdrawn."

Roman didn't turn around. His dark hair was disheveled, his jaw shadowed by dark stubble.

"She didn't use an airport," Roman said, his voice terrifyingly quiet—the tone he used right before an execution. "And she didn't take my money. Look at the high shelf behind the furs."

Marco stepped forward, looking up. "It's... it's empty, boss."

"There was an old canvas bag up there," Roman murmured, his fingers tightening around the wooden hanger until the oak snapped with a sharp, sickening crack. "She had it packed before she ever met me. She has been waiting to leave me for six years."

He turned, his dark eyes ablaze with a fury so black that even his hardened killers took an involuntary step back.

"Turn this entire coast upside down," Roman whispered. "Check every bus route. Check every off-grid rental. Find the man who helped her. Because if anyone laid a hand on my wife, I will burn down whatever city she's hiding in."
