My Mafia Fiancé Let His Rival's Daughter Flaunt His Family Ring—So I Disappeared At Dawn, Leaving Behind An Empty Aisle And A War He Never Saw Coming

Chapter 3 - Blood on the Cobblestones

Chapter 3 illustration

For four days, Matteo Bellini did not leave the neighborhood of Santo Spirito.

He did not use force. He did not send his men to drag Elena into an armored sedan. He did not threaten Maestro Rossi or bribe the local authorities to shut down the workshop. Instead, he conducted a quiet, agonizing siege of patience.

Every morning at seven-thirty, when Elena walked down the cobblestone incline from her small apartment overlooking the Arno River, Matteo was sitting at the corner table of the tiny outdoor cafe across the piazza. He wore dark sunglasses, sipping black espresso, watching her unlock the heavy iron grates of the atelier. Every afternoon, an exquisite wooden crate of rare, natural lapis lazuli pigments from Afghanistan and antique French hog-bristle brushes would be delivered to her workbench with no card attached.

Elena refused every gift, leaving the crates unopened by the door.

On the fifth evening, a violent Mediterranean squall rolled over the Tuscan hills, unleashing a torrential downpour that turned the ancient streets into slick, glistening ribbons of black stone.

At 8:15 PM, Elena pulled the wooden shutters of the workshop closed, locked the heavy brass deadbolt, and pulled her wool coat tightly around her shoulders. She stepped out into the rain, pulling up her umbrella, only to find Matteo standing beneath the stone portico of the church across the narrow street.

He held a large black umbrella, his overcoat damp at the shoulders, watching her with that relentless, brooding intensity that had once made her feel like the center of the universe.

Elena let out an exhausted, frustrated breath and marched across the wet stones directly toward him.

"This is madness, Matteo," she said, her breath fogging in the cold night air. "You have been sitting in that cafe for a hundred hours. You have a multi-billion-dollar enterprise in Illinois that requires your daily oversight. What do you think you are accomplishing here?"

"I am showing you that I am not leaving without you," Matteo replied simply, holding his umbrella over hers, doubling the shelter against the downpour. "I have all the time in the world."

"You don't have all the time in the world!" she snapped. "Your life is full of men with guns, contracts, and blood debts! You can't just play the lovesick tourist in Florence!"

Before Matteo could reply, the sharp, concussive squeal of wet tires echoed down the narrow stone canyon of the alley.

A dark gray Alfa Romeo sedan whipped around the corner of Via Maggio, its headlights blazing on high beam, blinding them in the rain. The car did not slow down; it skidded violently to a halt across the cobblestones, blocking the mouth of the alley.

The doors flew open in unison.

Three men dressed in heavy dark leather jackets stepped out into the rain. They did not hold briefcases or umbrellas. They held suppressed semi-automatic submachine guns, their faces masked by low-pulled caps.

"Bellini!" the lead man barked in harsh, Sicilian-accented Italian. "Don Antonio sends his regards from Chicago! He says if you won't marry his daughter, you won't live to bury your own!"

Elena gasped, her heart seizing with animal terror, but before she could take half a step backward, Matteo moved with the blinding, instinctual violence of a predatory animal.

He threw the heavy umbrella directly into the face of the lead gunman, lunging forward with his entire six-foot-three frame, slamming Elena violently behind the safety of the church’s thick stone pillars.

"Stay down!" Matteo roared.

*Phut-phut-phut-phut.*

A hail of suppressed gunfire chewed through the ancient stucco of the church wall, showering Elena in stone chips and plaster dust.

Matteo did not draw a weapon; he hadn't carried firearms through international customs. But he was a master of close-quarters slaughter. He closed the distance on the lead shooter before the man could clear the umbrella from his sights. Matteo caught the gunman’s wrist, twisting the joint with an audible, sickening *CRACK*, wrenching the submachine gun free while driving his elbow like a piston into the man’s throat.

The second attacker rushed from the left, brandishing a heavy combat blade. Matteo sidestepped the thrust with terrifying grace, caught the man by his leather collar, and slammed his skull face-first into the wrought-iron fence spikes lining the church courtyard. The man crumpled into the gutter like an empty suit.

The third gunman, realizing his partners had been neutralized in under six seconds, panicked. He raised his weapon, swinging the barrel away from Matteo and aiming directly toward the stone alcove where Elena stood frozen in terror.

"Elena!" Matteo shouted.

He did not hesitate. He did not calculate the risk.

Matteo threw his own body into the trajectory of the weapon just as the gunman pulled the trigger.

*BANG.*

The unsuppressed gunshot echoed like thunder through the narrow Florentine piazza.

A heavy 9mm round punched through the left shoulder of Matteo’s cashmere coat, tearing through the muscle and collarbone with a sickening, wet impact.

Matteo let out a guttural, wounded snarl, but the bullet did not stop him. The sheer momentum of his rage carried him across the cobblestones. He tackled the third gunman to the ground, his right hand seizing the man’s throat, slamming his head against the stone pavement once, twice, three times until the attacker went completely limp.

The alley went dead, suffocatingly silent, save for the furious roar of the rain drumming against the stone.

Matteo knelt in the dark water, breathing in ragged, shallow gasps, his left arm hanging uselessly at his side, bright arterial blood rapidly soaking through his coat and pooling into the cobblestone ruts.

Elena broke from the stone pillar, throwing her umbrella aside, falling to her knees in the freezing mud beside him. "Matteo! Oh God, Matteo!"

Matteo turned his head slowly. His face was chalk-white from blood loss and shock, but when his gray eyes met hers through the torrential rain, his first thought was not of his wound.

"Are you... are you hit?" he gasped, his teeth gritting against the agony. "Elena... did they touch you?"

Elena looked at the blood pouring through his fingers, her chest heaving as tears mixed with the cold rain streaming down her face. He had thrown himself in front of a bullet without a microsecond of hesitation to shield her.

"No, I'm not hit, you idiot!" she sobbed, ripping off her wool scarf and pressing it violently against his bleeding shoulder to stem the flow. "Hold on! Look at me, Matteo! Stay with me!"

Two black Mercedes sedans roared around the corner—Matteo’s security team, arriving thirty seconds too late. Marco Serra and four armed men spilled out onto the street, weapons drawn, taking in the three neutralized hitmen and their bleeding boss.

"Boss!" Marco shouted, rushing to his side.

"Get him to the private clinic!" Elena commanded, her voice ringing with an authority that made the seasoned mafia enforcers instantly obey her without question. "Move, right now!"
