My Husband Thought He Erased Me At 2:14 A.M.—Until 64 Cell Phones Buzzed In The Dark
Chapter 1 - The Ring of Fire
The cracked glass of David’s screen flickered beneath the overhead porch fixture.
Dr. Robert Sterling’s face filled the split frame, his silver brows drawn together in an icy ridge.
"Miller," the chairman’s voice barked through the speaker. "You have thirty seconds to explain why the entire executive surgical board just received footage of you compromising hospital security."
David froze, his scrub trousers stained with wet gravel from where his knees had buckled.
"Dr. Sterling, sir," David stammered, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. "It’s a domestic smear campaign. My wife hacked my personal cloud—"
"Save it," Sterling cut in. "You logged out of the acute trauma shift at St. Jude forty-two minutes ago without an attending handoff. Your operating privileges are suspended effective immediately."
The call terminated with a harsh click.
Across the cul-de-sac, porch lights were snapping on like dominoes.
Mrs. Gable marched past her pristine hydrangeas, pink robe billowing, her phone raised like a spotlight.
"David Miller," she announced to the empty street. "Section 4 of the Oakridge charter strictly forbids public lewdness and unauthorized commercial drop-offs after midnight."
David spun toward the front door, his hand slamming flat against the restored mahogany.
"Elena!" he hissed through the brass mail slot. "Unlock this deadbolt right now! You don't get to ruin my life from behind a pane of glass!"
Beside me in the foyer, Arthur Vance adjusted his cuff.
"He doesn't realize the locks aren't manual anymore," Arthur murmured.
I tapped the keypad on my tablet once.
A mechanical bolt slid home with a solid, echoing thud.
David yanked on the brass handle until his knuckles went dead white.
Nothing gave.
Then, from the bottom of the front steps, Chloe’s voice rose into a ragged scream.
"David! Look at the curb!"
