My Husband Thought He Erased Me At 2:14 A.M.—Until 64 Cell Phones Buzzed In The Dark
Chapter 2 - The Repossession Order
Two flatbed tow trucks idle at the mouth of our driveway, their amber roof lights bathing the cedar shingles in sickly yellow pulses.
Behind them sat an unmarked black sedan bearing the emblem of the county sheriff's civil division.
A tall deputy with a leather clipboard stepped into the glare, bypassing the manicured grass.
"David Miller?" the officer called out.
David didn't turn around. He kept his forehead pressed to the door, his breath fogging the frosted sidelight.
"This is private residential property," David ground out without looking back. "Get those commercial rigs off my pavers."
The deputy didn't raise his voice.
"I’m Sergeant Cross. I have an expedited writ of execution signed by Judge Vance forty minutes ago."
David’s head whipped around.
"Judge Vance? That's her uncle!"
"It's a verified court order, Dr. Miller," Sergeant Cross said, tapping the laminated sheet. "Under the terms of your 2024 asset indemnity agreement, any documented breach of marital contract triggers immediate liquidation of co-mingled property to secure debt recovery."
The driver of the lead flatbed dropped his hydraulic lift with a deafening metallic clang.
"Wait!" Chloe shrieked, backing into our mailbox while clutching the green Birkin bag against her chest. "That Mercedes belongs to him! He bought it with his surgical signing bonus!"
"The lease is registered to Miller Surgical LLC," Arthur stated, opening our front door three inches to speak through the brass security chain. "And as of 2:09 a.m., Miller Surgical LLC was absorbed into the Elena Vance Revocable Trust to satisfy outstanding loans."
The tow operator hooked heavy steel chains around the front axle of David’s C-Class.
David lunged forward. "Don't you touch that chassis!"
Sergeant Cross caught David by the shoulder, spinning him around with casual authority.
"Step back, sir. Keep your hands out of your pockets."
"You can't do this to me!" David yelled, his voice carrying straight into the open bedroom windows of our neighbors. "I built this practice! I brought eighty million in clinical billings to St. Jude!"
"And you billed forty-two thousand dollars in hotel suites to the clinical supply ledger," Arthur replied from the threshold.
He slid a manila folder through the gap in the door, dropping it squarely at David’s feet.
David stared at the papers fluttering in the night breeze.
The top sheet was stamped with a red seal: Notice of Forensic Seizure.
