My Cruel Husband Left Me And My Newborn Twin Daughters To Freeze Under An Overpass—Until New York’s Most Ruthless Mafia Don Carried Us Into The Shadows And Made Him Pay For Every Tear

Chapter 2 - The Price of a Broken Vow

Chapter 2 illustration

The wind sweeping off the Hudson River was bitter, whipping across the private glass-walled terrace fifty floors above Manhattan. Snowflakes swirled in the gray afternoon sky, melting against the heated bluestone tiles underfoot.

Ava sat bundled in a thick shearling coat on an outdoor lounge chair, protected behind a recessed alcove shielded from the draft. In her arms, wrapped securely in double layers of thermal cashmere, slept her two daughters. She had named them Grace and Hope—names that felt like a quiet defiance against the cruelty that had nearly snuffed them out. Every time she looked down at their button noses and soft, petal-like eyelashes, a fierce, primal fire ignited in her chest.

Two armed guards stood flanking the heavy glass doors. Elias stood at the terrace railing, his back to the city, his hands casually resting in his slacks pockets. His black overcoat hung open, revealing the shoulder holster beneath.

The service elevator chimed with a heavy hydraulic thud.

The metal gates slid open, and Roman shoved a man forward. Julian stumbled onto the wet stone tiles, falling onto his hands and knees.

Julian Miller had always prided himself on his appearance. He wore sharp, tailored suits purchased with stolen commissions, spent lavishly on cologne, and styled his thinning hair with meticulous precision. But today, his charcoal coat was torn at the elbow, his silk tie hung askew, and a dark purple bruise was blooming beneath his left eye where Roman’s men had disarmed him in the garage.

Julian pushed himself up, wiping dirty slush from his palms. He sneered, trying to gather his shattered bravado.

“Mr. Vance,” Julian began, his voice high and trembling despite his attempt at confidence. “There’s been an unfortunate misunderstanding. My wife... she’s unstable. Postpartum psychosis. She ran away from our home during a medical episode and took my family assets. Moretti and I have legitimate legal claims to—"

Julian’s voice stopped dead in his throat.

He saw Ava sitting in the alcove.

For a second, naked shock registered on his face. He had expected to find her half-dead, or perhaps confined to a basement cell. Instead, she was wrapped in luxury, her skin regaining its color, her eyes staring at him not with the submissive terror he was used to, but with pure, undiluted hatred.

Then his eyes dropped to the two tiny bundles in her arms.

“You still have those things?” Julian spat, disgust twisting his thin lips before he could catch himself. “Ava, you ungrateful bitch. I paid three thousand dollars to that midwife in Queens, and you humiliated me by spitting out two useless runts. Where is the thumb drive? Where did you hide the ledger before you crawled out into the snow?”

Ava didn't flinch. She tightened her hold on Grace and Hope, her voice ringing clear and steady over the whistling wind. “There is no thumb drive, Julian. You lost forty thousand dollars of Moretti’s money on bad sports bets in Atlantic City, and you beat me to hide your own incompetence. You thought if you killed me and my babies under that bridge, you could tell Moretti that rival crews hijacked your home.”

Julian lunged forward, raising his fist instinctively. “You shut your lying mouth!”

He didn't take two steps.

Elias moved with blinding, effortless speed. Before Julian could even register the motion, Elias’s left hand shot out like an iron clamp, seizing Julian by the throat. The force of the strike lifted Julian completely off his feet, slamming him backward against the reinforced glass balustrade overlooking the dizzying drop to the streets below.

Julian choked, his eyes bulging as his feet kicked helplessly in midair. His fingers clawed desperately at Elias’s forearm, but Elias’s grip didn't budge an inch.

“Look at me,” Elias whispered. The volume of his voice didn't rise, but the lethal promise vibrating through it made Julian freeze in sheer terror.

“Do you know what I saw under that bridge, Julian?” Elias asked, leaning in until his breath fogged against Julian’s terrified face. “I saw a woman whose body was torn open by childbirth. Her spine was bruised black from your boots. Her knees were scraped to the bone because she dragged herself through slush to keep her babies’ faces out of the frozen mud. She had five broken ribs, hypothermia, and internal hemorrhaging.”

Elias tightened his fingers. Julian let out a wet, strangled wheeze.

“A real man protects his blood with his dying breath,” Elias continued, his gray eyes devoid of any human mercy. “A parasite beats a mother and leaves newborns to freeze because they didn't have the anatomy his pathetic ego craved. You came up here thinking you could negotiate with me? You came up here thinking you could threaten the woman who survived you?”

“P-please...” Julian gasped, tears of agony leaking down his face. “Moretti... Moretti will go to war... if I disappear...”

Elias smiled—a dark, humorless curve of his lips that signaled an impending execution.

“Moretti won't go to war for a thief who skimmed his accounts,” Elias said. He reached into his coat with his free hand, pulled out a manila folder, and dropped it onto Julian’s chest. The sheets of paper fluttered across the wet stone. “That is your audit from Moretti’s banking branch. My accountants tore through your dummy corporations this morning. By five o'clock today, Moretti will know you owe him two point four million dollars. And he will know that you tried to frame his own captains for your wife's disappearance.”

Julian’s face went past pale; it turned the color of ashes. “No... no, Vance, please! He’ll feed me to his dogs!”

“Not today,” Elias said coldly. He pulled Julian back from the edge and dropped him onto the tiles like a sack of rotten meat. Julian lay there, gasping for air, clutching his bruised throat.

Elias looked down at him with utter revulsion. “You want to be a father, Julian? Then you will pay the price of being one. Roman, take his passport. Freeze his personal accounts under the syndicate lien. Throw him into the holding cells in Newark until the papers are signed.”

“What papers?” Julian sobbed, looking up from the floor.

Elias walked over to Ava’s chair and placed a protective hand on her shoulder. “Full, irrevocable termination of parental rights. Complete transfer of every asset you own to a trust established for Grace and Hope Miller. And when you sign it, Julian, you will walk out of New York with nothing but the clothes on your back. If you ever step foot within five hundred miles of Ava or my daughters again, you won't get a grave. You'll become the foundation of a pier in the harbor.”
