My Cruel Husband Left Me And My Newborn Twin Daughters To Freeze Under An Overpass—Until New York’s Most Ruthless Mafia Don Carried Us Into The Shadows And Made Him Pay For Every Tear
Chapter 1 - The Predator at the Door
The heavy mahogany door of the penthouse felt like the only barrier between life and death. The knock sounded again—three slow, deliberate taps that reverberated through the vast, marble-floored foyer.
Ava clutched the cashmere blanket to her chest, her knuckles turning bone-white. The phantom ache across her spine flared violently with every heartbeat. It had only been three days since she had given birth on a stained mattress in a damp Brooklyn basement, only three days since heavy work boots had slammed into her ribs, punishing her for daring to bring two fragile baby girls into the world instead of a male heir. Her body was still swollen, trembling, and stitched together by the private surgeons Elias Vance had summoned in the middle of the night.
Elias did not look back at her as he moved toward the entrance. He moved with the silent, fluid grace of an apex predator that knew every square inch of his territory. His dark bespoke suit was tailored over broad shoulders, and his hand rested firmly beneath the left lapel of his jacket, where the matte-black grip of a custom Kimber .45 was holstered.
He clicked the hidden intercom switch beside the doorframe. “Speak.”
“Boss, it’s Roman,” a gravelly voice crackled through the speaker. “We’ve got Julian Miller downstairs in the private service garage. He didn’t come alone. He brought Frank Moretti’s middle-tier enforcers. They’re claiming custody under domestic law, but Moretti’s men are armed with subcompacts under their coats. Julian thinks he’s walking out of here with a seven-figure settlement.”
Ava let out a ragged gasp. The name Julian felt like battery acid in her ears. She remembered the look on his face in that dimly lit room—the cold disgust in his dark eyes when the midwife announced two girls. Julian had always been obsessed with pride and lineage. He worked as an accountant and loan broker for low-level syndicates, constantly scheming to claw his way into high-ranking circles. To Julian, an eldest son was a bargaining chip, an apprentice, a statement of dominance. Two daughters were merely mouths to feed, useless liabilities in his twisted climb up New York’s criminal hierarchy.
Elias’s jaw set into hard, sharp angles. His steel-gray eyes shifted across the corridor to where the nursery door was slightly ajar. From within came the faint, rhythmic coos of two infants breathing under the warmth of specialized incubators.
“Did he say why he believes I would give him anything?” Elias asked into the receiver, his voice chillingly calm.
“Julian found out your private motorcade brought Ava and the babies in from the Hudson embankment,” Roman replied. “He doesn’t know you stopped out of mercy, Boss. He thinks you took them because Ava possesses his offshore ledger—the one that tracks Moretti’s laundering routes. He thinks she fled to you to sell him out. He wants his wife and children back so he can ‘discipline’ her and retrieve his files before Moretti finds out what’s missing.”
Ava shook her head violently, tears stinging her eyes as she pushed herself up against the pillows. “There is no ledger!” she whispered, her voice cracking with fury and fear. “I don't have his files! I never touched his business! He’s lying to them to justify hunting me down!”
Elias released the intercom button and turned around. The harsh chandelier light carved deep shadows beneath his cheekbones. When he looked at Ava, the terrifying coldness in his eyes softened by a fraction of a millimeter. He walked back to the edge of the king-sized bed, his presence towering but surprisingly grounding.
“I know,” Elias said quietly. His voice was deep, steady, like thunder rolling over distant hills. “A man who beats a woman who just delivered life doesn't act on logic, Ava. He acts on terror and cowardice. He threw you away like trash because his fragile ego couldn't handle two daughters. Now he realizes the most powerful man in Manhattan picked up what he discarded. He is terrified of what you might tell me, and he is trying to use Moretti’s muscle to cover his tracks.”
“You can’t let him take them,” Ava pleaded, her fingernails biting into the palms of her hands until crescent indents showed red. “Please, Elias. Kill me if you want something in return, take every year of my life to pay for their care, but don't let Julian touch my girls. He will leave them in a dumpster. He will let them die.”
Elias stepped closer. For the first time since she had regained consciousness, he reached out. His large hand was warm, calloused, and surprisingly gentle as his thumb brushed away a tear trailing down her pale cheek.
“Ava,” he murmured, holding her gaze with an intensity that made the room stop spinning. “Three nights ago, your daughters’ skin was blue from the freezing wind off the river. I felt their hearts beating against my bare chest in the back of my truck while you bled into my wool coat. From the second their breath warmed against my skin, they ceased being Julian Miller’s bloodline.”
A shiver ran down Ava’s spine. “What are they, then?”
“They are mine,” Elias said simply, the declaration absolute and final. “And in this city, no one touches what belongs to Elias Vance.”
He turned toward the door and keyed the intercom again. “Roman.”
“Yes, Boss?”
“Disarm Moretti’s boys. Break their fingers if they hesitate. Then bring Julian Miller up to the penthouse terrace. Tell him the Don is ready to discuss the price of his daughters.”
