My Billionaire Husband Stabbed Me To Protect His Pregnant Mistress—He Didn't Realize My Smartwatch Streamed Their Entire Murder Plot Directly To 911

Chapter 4 - The Public Ambush

Chapter 4 illustration

The granite steps of the Suffolk County Courthouse were swarmed by three dozen broadcast news crews, photojournalists, and curious spectators on Friday morning. The October air was brisk, carrying the salty bite of the harbor wind.

When a black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the curb, the cameras erupted in a blinding blizzard of synchronized flashes. Selina Cole stepped out onto the pavement, looking like an angel of tragic sorrow. She wore a tailored ivory cashmere overcoat, her hair pulled back into an elegant, modest chignon, her face pale and devoid of makeup save for a faint touch of powder. Flanking her was Arthur Vance—Julian’s wealthy, powerful father—and Richard Sterling, one of the most ruthless criminal defense attorneys on the Eastern Seaboard.

"Miss Cole! Did you encourage Julian to attack his wife?"

"Selina! Are you cooperating with the district attorney?!"

Selina said nothing, offering only a frail, tremulous dip of her chin, leaning heavily on the arm of her attorney as though the weight of the public scrutiny were too much for her delicate frame to bear.

Ten minutes later, inside the third-floor courtroom of Judge Eleanor Thornton, the gallery was packed to absolute capacity.

Julian Vance was escorted through the side holding door by two armed court officers. He looked hollowed-out, broken, and disheveled. His tailored suits had been replaced by a baggy, two-piece orange county detention jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to a heavy chain wrapped around his waist. His hair was greasy and uncombed, his cheeks hollow, his eyes darting frantically across the room until they landed on Selina.

Selina did not look back at him. She kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, deliberately ignoring the man who had ruined his life with a kitchen knife on her command.

"All rise!" the bailiff boomed.

Judge Thornton, a formidable woman in her late sixties known for running a tight, no-nonsense courtroom, took her seat beneath the seal of the Commonwealth. "We are here for the preliminary evidentiary motion in Commonwealth v. Julian Vance and Selina Cole. The defense has submitted a motion to dismiss Count Two—Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder—as applied to Defendant Cole. Mr. Sterling, you have five minutes."

Richard Sterling stood up smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "Your Honor, this entire indictment against Miss Cole is an egregious overreach by the prosecution. Miss Cole was a terrified, passive bystander during an unpredictable domestic explosion between a husband and his clinically unstable wife. She held no weapon. She made no threats. The Commonwealth has presented zero physical evidence demonstrating prior agreement, intent, or conspiracy. To hold my client on a capital charge is a grotesque violation of her constitutional liberties."

"The Commonwealth has an immediate response, Your Honor," Assistant District Attorney Sarah Vance (no relation to Julian) announced, standing up from the prosecution table. "And we request permission to introduce newly authenticated evidence provided by the victim."

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Every head in the gallery turned in unison.

I walked down the center aisle of the courtroom. I wore an ink-black tailored pantsuit, my spine straight as an arrow, my head held high. I didn't lean on a cane. I didn't ask for assistance. Every step sent a sharp pull across the healing stitches in my abdomen, but my face remained carved from polished granite. Behind me walked Detective Miller and Marcus Sterling, carrying two locked aluminum briefcases.

Julian let out a ragged, choking gasp from the defense table, his chains rattling loudly against the wood as he tried to stand. "Nora..."

I did not look at him. To me, the man in orange was already a corpse.

I walked straight past their table and took a seat beside the prosecutor.

"Your Honor," ADA Sarah Vance said, stepping toward the clerk's desk. "We submit into evidence Exhibit D-1: The verified, forensic cellular data retrieved from Defendant Cole’s personal device, and Exhibit D-2: Certified digital financial records seized under federal warrant from Vance Capital and S.C. Global Logistics."

Richard Sterling’s eyes narrowed in sudden, sharp alarm. Selina stiffened in her chair, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of the mahogany table until her knuckles turned ivory.

"What is the nature of this evidence, Counsel?" Judge Thornton asked, adjusting her half-moon reading glasses.

"Exhibit D-1 contains an encrypted audio recording recovered from Mrs. Vance’s Apple Watch Ultra, which captured the entirety of the attack in uncompressed high-definition audio," Sarah Vance stated, her voice ringing clearly across the silent courtroom. "The court has already reviewed the transcript of Defendant Julian Vance admitting to the premeditated nature of the assault. However, what defense counsel failed to realize is that forty-eight hours prior to the stabbing, Miss Cole sent eighteen encrypted text messages to Julian Vance via an off-shore messaging platform."

Sarah Vance turned toward the projection screen mounted on the courtroom wall, tapping a remote control.

The high-resolution display illuminated, projecting screenshots of recovered text logs:

*SELINA (Oct 12, 11:42 PM): "If she lives through the audit, we both go to federal prison, Julian. You know what happens to white-collar cons. The trust pays out forty million the second her death certificate is signed. Cut the camera feed to the floor first. I’ll come up with a scratch on my arm and create the provocation. All you have to do is finish it."*

*JULIAN (Oct 12, 11:46 PM): "Are you sure the trust bypasses probate?"*

*SELINA (Oct 12, 11:48 PM): "My estate lawyer confirmed it. Forty million clear. We pay off your investors, we save my firm, and we're in St. Barts by Thanksgiving. Don't get weak on me now."*

A collective, horrified gasp tore through the courtroom gallery. Reporters began scribbling furiously on their pads; two spectators stood up in shock.

Julian snapped his head toward Selina, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple. The chains around his waist clanked violently as he slammed both of his cuffed fists onto the defense table.

"You said you deleted those messages!" Julian roared, spittle flying from his lips as his eyes bulged with feral betrayal. "You swore to me that app was untraceable! You set me up!"

"Shut up, Julian!" Selina shrieked, dropping her delicate, aristocratic facade completely, her face contorting into an ugly, venomous sneer. "Shut your pathetic mouth!"

"You told me she was crazy!" Julian bellowed, lunging across the table toward her, his fingers curling into claws before two burly court officers tackled him to the floor, pinning his shoulders against the carpet. "You told me we had no choice! You used me to kill my own wife! You used me to steal her family's money!"

"Order! Order in this court!" Judge Thornton slammed her gavel repeatedly, the wood cracking like pistol shots through the bedlam. "Bailiffs, restrain the defendants! Sit them down!"

I sat at the prosecution table, watching the two vipers tear each other apart in the public light. I reached into my blazer pocket, my fingers gently brushing against the tiny white box containing the two positive pregnancy tests.

"Your Honor," Sarah Vance added, her voice slicing through the chaos with devastating finality. "The Commonwealth is formally amending the charges against both defendants. We are filing charges of Attempted Aggravated Murder, Criminal Conspiracy, Wire Fraud, and under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 265, Section 13L, we are charging both Julian Vance and Selina Cole with Fetal Homicide."

Julian froze on the floor beneath the bailiffs' weight. His head slowly lifted, his bloodshot, terrified eyes locking onto mine across the wooden railing.

"Fetal... homicide?" Julian whispered, the words trembling on his lips like a dying breath. "Nora... what... what does that mean?"

I stood up slowly from my chair, leaning forward so that my voice carried across the frozen, breathless room.

"It means you didn't just try to murder your wife, Julian," I said, my tone as cold and tranquil as deep arctic water. "You murdered your own child."

Julian’s face collapsed into an expression of raw, unadulterated, soul-crushing horror. He buried his face in the carpet, letting out an animalistic, howling scream of pure agony as the court officers hoisted him to his feet.

Judge Thornton slammed her gavel down one last time. "Defendant Cole’s bail is revoked immediately. Both defendants will be remanded to maximum-security custody without bond pending trial. Court is adjourned."
