My Billionaire Husband Stabbed Me To Protect His Pregnant Mistress—He Didn't Realize My Smartwatch Streamed Their Entire Murder Plot Directly To 911

Chapter 2 - The Waking Nightmare

Chapter 2 illustration

The sterile, chemical odor of iodine and medical-grade chlorhexidine hit my senses before my eyes could focus. Overhead, the rhythmic, mechanical cadence of a cardiac monitor hummed in steady, persistent intervals: *beep... beep... beep.* Every muscle in my core felt as though it had been laced with barbed wire and set ablaze.

"Keep the saline bolus running, nurse. Her hematocrit is still borderline," a woman's voice noted from the foot of the bed. "She is remarkably tough. If that blade had drifted two millimeters to the left, it would have severed the common hepatic artery entirely. She would have bled out on that rug in under four minutes."

"Did she lose the child?" another voice asked—a deep, gravelly baritone that carried the no-nonsense authority of municipal law enforcement.

I tried to speak, but my tongue felt like thick, dry leather glued to the roof of my mouth. A dry, wheezing cough rattled in my chest, sending a bolt of white-hot agony through my surgical stitches.

Instantly, a warm, calloused hand rested gently on my shoulder. "Easy, Mrs. Vance. Don't try to move. You are in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. You're safe."

I forced my heavy eyelids open, squinting against the harsh glare of the hospital lights. Standing over me was a physician in green scrubs and a broad-shouldered man in a rumpled charcoal wool suit. A gold shield pinned to his leather belt identified him as Detective Miller, Boston Police Department Homicide and Major Crimes.

"Water..." I managed to whisper, my throat burning.

The nurse leaned forward, carefully wetting my cracked lips with a small sponge before adjusting the oxygen cannula beneath my nose.

"Detective Miller," I choked out, my fingers trembling as I reached down, my palm brushing against the thick, bulky gauze pad taped securely across my right abdomen. The agonizing emptiness in my womb hit me with the force of an avalanche. I looked at the female surgeon, tears spilling hot and fast down my temples. "My... my baby. Please. The pregnancy tests... were in the drawer..."

The surgeon looked down at her clipboard, a profound, heavy sorrow crossing her eyes. She reached out, taking my cold fingers into hers. "I am so deeply sorry, Nora. The catastrophic internal hemorrhage and the hypovolemic shock... you were in cardiac arrest when the trauma team opened your abdomen. We had to perform an emergency laparotomy to ligate the internal bleeders. We could not save the gestation."

A strangled, breathless sob tore from my throat. It felt as if my heart had been carved out with a rusted blade. The child I had dreamed of holding, the future I had spent three years preparing for—murdered before Julian even knew our baby existed, sacrificed on the altar of his mistress's sick ego. The grief was suffocating, heavy enough to crush the breath from my lungs, but directly behind it, rising from the cold ashes of my shattered life, came something else.

A pure, diamond-hard, unyielding fury.

"Where is he?" I whispered, my voice dropping into a lethal, steady register that made Detective Miller’s eyebrows lift. "Where is Julian?"

Miller pulled a molded plastic chair close to my bedside, resting his forearms on his knees. "Julian Vance was taken into custody forty minutes after the nine-one-one call was initiated. The responding patrol units arrived at your penthouse while he was still standing over you with blood on his shirt, attempting to scrub down the fruit knife with a kitchen towel. He was booked at Area A-1 for attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."

"And Selina?" I asked, my knuckles whitening against the bed rails. "Where is that woman?"

Miller’s jaw tightened, a grim shadow settling over his weathered face. "Miss Cole is currently free on a two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar cash bond posted by an associate firm in New York. And you need to understand something, Mrs. Vance... Julian’s defense attorneys have already launched an aggressive media and legal counter-offensive."

"What are they claiming?"

"Self-defense," Miller stated plainly, pulling an iPad from his leather satchel and tapping the glass. "Selina gave an eight-page sworn statement to the district attorney’s intake clerk. She claims you have been suffering from paranoid delusions for months, that you stalked her to her fitness studio and sent her threatening anonymous letters. She claims she went to your apartment to confront you peacefully, that you attacked her in a psychotic rage with that fruit knife, and that Julian stepped between you two to protect her life. Julian's lawyers are swearing under oath that in the violent struggle to disarm you, you fell onto the blade."

"That is a monstrous lie!" I gasped, the cardiac monitor spiking with rapid, frantic chimes. "I was in my pajamas! I hadn't left that apartment all morning! The building has security cameras on every floor! Check the elevator logs! Check the hallway cameras!"

Miller sighed, his expression filled with grim sympathy. "We subpoenaed the building's server room within two hours of the attack, Nora. The digital video records for the thirty-fourth floor between one o’clock and four o’clock that afternoon were completely wiped. The files were deleted directly from the master cloud terminal using an administrative login at three-fifteen PM—forty minutes before Selina arrived at your door."

My breath seized in my throat. Julian had given Selina the administrative passwords to our residential smart-home network three months ago under the pretense that her design firm was helping him upgrade the penthouse's automated environmental controls. They had meticulously premeditated every detail. They had erased my alibi, orchestrated a fraudulent domestic altercation, and staged a self-defense slaughter.

"They believe they have this case locked down," Miller said quietly. "Julian’s father is a major political donor in this state. Two senior partners from a premier defense firm are already leaning on the district attorney, arguing that this is a tragic domestic dispute driven by a wife's mental breakdown. Without unimpeachable physical evidence proving who drew the weapon, the state may be forced to reduce the charges to involuntary manslaughter or dismiss the indictment against Selina entirely."

A cold, bitter sneer touched my lips despite the tears staining my pillow. They thought they had wiped the servers. They thought they had cleaned the digital footprint. They thought they had left me with no voice.

"Detective," I said, looking straight into his eyes. "Where are the personal effects I was wearing when the paramedics cut off my clothes? Where is my watch?"

"It’s logged in the central evidence vault at headquarters," Miller replied. "The screen was fractured—Julian trampled it with his dress shoes before the officers tackled him—but the casing is intact."

"The casing doesn't matter," I whispered, the fire in my blood burning away every shred of my physical weakness. "My watch was linked to an independent enterprise iCloud server registered to my maiden name. The recording didn't stay on the device. It streamed live."

Miller froze, leaning forward until his face was inches from mine. "What did you record, Nora?"

"Every single syllable," I said, a lethal smile spreading across my face. "Log into my account, Detective. Listen to the Voice Memos folder from Tuesday afternoon. Listen to my husband tell his mistress that he finished the job just like she drew it up. And then... bring me my lawyer. Because I am going to tear their entire world down to the bedrock."
