Cheating Husband Moves Mistress Into Our Mansion—So I Sold The House For Cash While They Both Slept In My Bed!

Chapter 4 - The Curb of Humiliation

Chapter 4 illustration

“You can’t do this!” Tanya shrieked, racing down the stairs in her bare feet, her manicured facade shattering into hysterical screams. “I work for an enterprise branding firm! I am a professional! You cannot throw my belongings onto the street in plastic tubs!”

Deputy Miller turned his cold, implacable gaze upon her. “Ma'am, you are not even listed on the lease or the corporate registry. You are an unauthorized guest on private corporate property. If you are not off the stone pathway in seven minutes, you will be transported to the 53 Division precinct in handcuffs.”

Tanya gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She whipped around to Gavin, grabbing the sleeve of his navy bathrobe with frantic, claw-like fingers.

“Gavin! Do something!” she pleaded, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. “Call your lawyer! Call the police! You told me this house was yours! You told me you were getting five million dollars from her! You said we were going to Miami!”

Gavin stood paralyzed.

His eyes darted frantically around the foyer—the soaring ceilings, the Italian chandelier, the pristine art on the walls that he had bragged about to his clients for eight years. It was all gone. Wiped out by a single midnight keystroke from the woman he had called an emotionally distant computer programmer.

“Arthur... please,” Gavin choked out, tears of humiliation burning in his eyes. “Arthur, you know me. We had dinner at the Granite Club last month. Call Rochelle. Tell her I’m sorry. Tell her we can work this out. We can talk about the divorce terms! She doesn't have to do this!”

Arthur looked at Gavin with profound, unadulterated disgust.

“Rochelle isn't taking calls, Gavin,” Arthur said coldly. “And for what it’s worth, Daniel Cho delivered the audio recordings of your private phone calls with Miss Desmarais to Rochelle’s legal team at four o’clock yesterday afternoon. She heard every single word you said about taking her house. She heard your little speech about draining her equity before the IPO.”

Gavin’s jaw slacked. His breath hitched in his throat.

She knew.

The realization crashed over him like a tidal wave of ice water. Rochelle hadn't been oblivious. She hadn't been ignoring them in the kitchen. She had stood there, watching them drink her anniversary wine, listening to them plot her financial ruin, while she was already holding the detonator in her pocket.

“Five minutes, Mr. Obi,” Deputy Miller announced.

“Let me get my car,” Gavin rasped, stumbling toward the garage door. “My Porsche is in the bay—”

“The Porsche Cayenne was leased through Tessera Technologies' corporate fleet,” Arthur interrupted, pulling a set of keys from his pocket and tossing them to a private transport driver waiting by the curb. “The lease was canceled at midnight. The car is currently being repatriated to the corporate depot in Mississauga.”

“My laptop!” Gavin shouted, panic reaching a crescendo. “My work computer is in the kitchen!”

“The hardware is company property belonging to your design agency,” Deputy Miller said, stepping between Gavin and the hallway. “A separate receiver will inventory the office assets under an emergency commercial lien filed by Obi Capital this morning for six hundred thousand dollars in unpaid loan interest. You may retrieve your personal clothing. Nothing else.”

Two movers stepped forward, grabbed the two yellow plastic bins, and carried them down the front porch steps, placing them directly onto the wet concrete of the public sidewalk.

“Time is up,” Deputy Miller said, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. “Step outside, Mr. Obi. Miss Desmarais. Now.”

Gavin looked at the deputy. He looked at the two armed security guards standing on the threshold.

He had no choice.

In front of four dozen curious neighbors who were peeking through their sheer curtains, the prestigious creative director of downtown Toronto walked down his heated stone pathway wearing only a silk bathrobe and bare feet, shivering violently in the four-degree October drizzle.

Behind him stumbled Tanya, dragging her yellow plastic bin through the wet leaves, crying hysterically, her expensive hair plastered to her face, wearing Rochelle’s silk robe over her clothes.

CLACK.

The heavy mahogany front door of 142 Westbourne Avenue swung shut.

A locksmith immediately began drilling out the deadbolts, replacing the smart cylinders with high-security Swiss locks that responded only to encrypted biometric cards.

A team of two security guards stood at the gate, folding their arms, their eyes fixed on the two shivering figures on the sidewalk.

A city bus rumbled past, splashing dirty street water across Gavin’s bare ankles.

Tanya stopped, looked down at her damp clothes inside the yellow bin, and then turned on Gavin with pure, venomous hatred.

“You pathetic loser,” she hissed, tears cutting clean streaks through her makeup. “You told me you were a millionaire. You don't even own a pair of pants!”

“Tanya, wait—” Gavin pleaded, reaching out a shivering hand.

She slapped his arm away with enough force to leave a red mark, grabbed her yellow bin, and began marching down the street toward the avenue, barefoot on the freezing asphalt, screaming into her cell phone for an Uber.

Gavin stood completely alone on the curb of the street he used to rule, clutching his robe against the biting wind, with nothing left in the world except a yellow plastic tub and the sound of his own teeth chattering in the cold.
