The Violin in the Lost Property Room
Chapter 1 - A case without a name
Sam catalogued lost umbrellas, bags and children's gloves at the railway station. The violin arrived on a wet Monday in a battered case. There was no address, only a paper concert ticket and a repaired strap.
After the required holding period, unclaimed objects went to auction. Sam knew enough about music to recognize that the instrument deserved care. He loosened its strings and placed it away from the leaking window.
A teenager came three weeks later, asking for a brown case. When Sam described the violin, her relief turned into worry. She had lost it on purpose, she admitted, and now wanted it back.
