The Suitcase Full of Schoolbooks
Chapter 2 - A child’s address
The parent arrived with travel documents and a photograph of the suitcase. Their son waited beside her, staring at the office shelves. He identified the sweater and described a drawing hidden in a notebook.
It showed his old classroom, with each desk labeled. He had brought the books because the new school seemed less frightening if he could carry something familiar.
His mother thanked Leila repeatedly. She had worried about replacing clothes first, not realizing how much the books mattered. Leila explained that people could miss different parts of the same lost case.
The child asked whether airports had classrooms. Leila said they had many rooms, but she was still learning what each was for. He seemed relieved that adults also had unfamiliar places to understand.
