Chapter 1 - After closing
The power failed as librarian Ruth reached for her keys. Emergency lamps glowed above the shelves. Outside, rain flooded the street and buses stopped running.
A delivery rider knocked first, soaked and shaking. Ruth let him sit near the entrance. A mother and two children followed, then an elderly man whose stairwell was dark. Ruth called her supervisor, who approved keeping the ground floor open as a temporary shelter.
She could offer chairs, drinking water and blankets from the children's reading corner. She could not promise when transport would return. People settled between the shelves, checking phones as their batteries dwindled.
