The Night the Library Stayed Open
Chapter 2 - The story nobody expected
One child asked for a story. Ruth read beneath an emergency lamp while the delivery rider translated difficult words for the elderly man. When her voice tired, the mother took over.
The rider admitted he had never been inside the library. He thought a membership would cost too much. Ruth explained that local borrowing was free and helped him note the documents he would need.
The elderly man had stopped coming after his eyesight worsened. Ruth showed him the large-print shelves and told him about audiobooks.
Near midnight, everyone stopped refreshing the outage map for a few minutes. The room grew quiet around the same sentence. Ruth realized she had spent years counting borrowed books without measuring how many people thought the building was not for them.
