The Night the Library Stayed Open
Chapter 3 - When the lights returned
Electricity returned at two. Nobody applauded; several people were asleep. Ruth woke them gently when buses began running and recorded the shelter's use for her supervisor.
The next week she put a clear sign beside the entrance: Free membership. Ask us how. She added a chair near the large-print books and arranged a beginner's session on borrowing digital titles.
The delivery rider returned with his documents and borrowed a novel he had heard half of during the storm. The elderly man joined the audiobook session, bringing a neighbor.
Ruth did not start keeping the library open all night. Staff and safety still mattered. But once a month they held an evening reading hour for people who worked late.
At the first session the mother volunteered to read. Her children chose the story. When Ruth reached for the light switch afterward, the room was empty in a different way: everyone knew when they could come back.
