The Shoes Outside the Dance Hall
Chapter 3 - A slower song
At his sister's wedding, Ben danced without counting aloud. Clara, invited as his guest, wore her own shoes. The bride took a photograph of them laughing after an imperfect turn.
Later a slower song began. Ben asked rather than assumed. Clara said yes.
They continued attending classes after the wedding, though the original excuse had ended. Sometimes they argued outside the hall, then returned to the conversation when both had cooled down. Neither called dancing a cure for their lives.
Months later Clara found the repaired shoes in the spare box and noticed another beginner hesitating at the door. She offered them and introduced the instructor.
Ben waited across the room. When the music began, Clara crossed toward him without watching her feet. They still missed steps. The difference was that neither treated a mistake as a reason to stop moving together.
