The Recipe Written in Three Hands
Chapter 3 - Enough for the table
The spinach dumplings looked uneven. They tasted good, and there were enough for lunch the next day. Nina photographed the tray, then sent the picture to her grandmother instead of posting it as a perfect result.
Her grandmother asked her to write the new filling into the book. Nina hesitated. She did not want to overwrite tradition.
"Tradition has eaten cheaper vegetables before," her mother said.
They gave each version a date rather than calling one correct. The oldest page stayed in place, its stains and crossed-out measurements intact. Nina added a note: Make enough for whoever comes.
Months later her brother borrowed the notebook and replaced tofu with beans. Nina protested automatically, then remembered the video call. She asked how it tasted.
He said their grandmother had already requested the recipe. Nina left another page blank, understanding that keeping something alive sometimes meant making room for a fourth hand.
