The Recipe Written in Three Hands
Chapter 2 - Measurements nobody shared
The three women cooked together through the screen. Nina measured everything. Her mother added water by feel. Her grandmother complained that both were making the dough too dry, though the camera could barely show it.
They laughed, then grew irritated, then began again. Nina asked them to explain the texture rather than insist she already knew it. Her mother described soft clay. Her grandmother said an earlobe. Neither comparison was precise, but together they helped.
Nina wrote notes in the margins. Her mother added the mushroom filling and its cooking time. Her grandmother dictated what to do when the dough tore, a detail missing from every earlier page.
For once, the notebook contained the mistakes as well as the instructions.
