The Photograph with the Empty Corner
Chapter 1 - A missing person
Amir scanned family photographs for his grandmother's birthday. In one image, everyone stood at a picnic table except his grandfather, whose sleeve appeared at the far edge. Several later photographs contained no trace of him.
Amir assumed he disliked cameras. His grandmother said he used to love them. After an argument with her brother, he stopped attending large gatherings rather than make everyone choose sides.
The quarrel concerned a loan, though nobody remembered the figures the same way. Amir found it strange that an uncertain sum could remove a person from twenty years of pictures.
He asked his grandfather about the cropped sleeve. The old man said he had left early that day. He could no longer remember what they had eaten.
