The Photograph with the Empty Corner
Chapter 2 - An invitation without conditions
Amir wanted to arrange a dramatic reconciliation. His grandmother stopped him. "Do not turn my birthday into a trap."
Instead, he invited his grandfather to come early and help hang the photographs. He told the other relatives clearly who would be there. Anyone could decide for themselves whether to attend.
His grandmother's brother arrived carrying a cake. The two men stood beneath the picnic photograph, awkward as strangers at a bus stop. Amir resisted the urge to explain what they ought to feel.
Eventually the brother said he remembered the argument badly. His grandfather replied that he did too. Neither tried to recover a perfect account of the debt. They agreed it was a poor reason to keep missing the same birthday.
