The Obsidian Contract

Chapter 6 - The Decryption Key

Chapter 6 illustration

Back in the subterranean vault twenty minutes later, the adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the cold, steady hum of the server racks and the sharp smell of ozone. Arthur Vance sat shivering in a leather chair by the desk, a cup of lukewarm black coffee shaking in his hands while Damon paced the length of the room with the titanium drive clutched in his fist. ""The encryption on this drive isn't commercial,"" I said, my fingers flying across the terminal keyboard as I parsed the raw hex code scrolling down the amber monitor. ""It's a proprietary military-grade cipher developed by the old Soviet naval intelligence directorate in the late eighties—the exact same cipher Marcus Vance used when he managed communications for the estate.""

Damon stopped pacing, turning his sharp gaze toward me. ""Can you break it?"" ""Not with brute force,"" I replied, pulling up a secondary script window and cross-referencing the variable parameters against the linguistic papers I had published during my master's research. ""Unless we use the linguistic key embedded in my mother's old letters from the municipal archive. The syntax structure of Marcus's encryption matches the dialect markers of the St. Petersburg underground dialect.""

Arthur looked up from his coffee, his eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at me. ""Who... who are you? You talk like a federal agent, but you dress like a college student."" ""She's my chief intelligence analyst,"" Damon intervened smoothly, stepping behind my chair and watching the scrolling code with predatory interest. ""And right now, she's the only person in this hemisphere keeping you out of a federal penitentiary or a shallow grave in the New Jersey marshes. So drink your coffee, Arthur, and keep your mouth shut.""

I typed a final string of commands into the terminal, integrating the linguistic decryption algorithm into the primary partition of the drive. The screen flashed green, and a massive directory of files unspooled before our eyes: financial ledgers, shell company bank accounts in Cyprus, and signed receipts detailing every illegal arms shipment, bribe, and extortion payment made by Viktor Gusev over the past decade. But at the very bottom of the directory sat a single folder labeled Vance-Cross-1995, protected by an additional biometric lock that required a physical fingerprint and a retinal scan from someone carrying the original bloodline of the estate's founders.

Damon stared at the folder name, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. ""That's my father's private archive,"" Damon whispered, the realization hitting him with the force of a physical blow. ""The files he claimed were destroyed in the fire thirty-one years ago.""
