The Neighbor Who Never Took the Lift
Chapter 3 - Choosing the stairs
The manager arranged lighting repairs first. A door adjustment followed. Larger changes needed approval and money, so residents listed priorities instead of promising everything immediately.
Jon began taking the stairs occasionally, for exercise. One morning he met Mina on the third-floor landing and started to move aside apologetically.
"I chose them today," she said. "The weather is cool."
He nodded, and they talked about an ordinary matter: the bakery downstairs had changed its opening hours.
Weeks later he saw her carrying groceries into the lift with another resident. He did not congratulate her across the lobby. He held the door at the entrance, just as he would for anyone with full hands.
The building remained imperfect. Its residents became a little better at asking what a problem was before deciding it was trivial. Jon stopped admiring Mina's stairs as evidence of discipline. He admired her persistence in asking a reasonable question until someone listened.
