The Neighbor Who Never Took the Lift
Chapter 2 - A question for an expert
Jon brought the request to the building manager without describing Mina's personal history. The manager asked a qualified maintenance engineer to inspect the alarm and controls.
The safety alarm had to remain audible. But another repeated tone, caused by an incorrectly configured door setting, was unnecessarily loud. The engineer corrected that setting and explained the difference.
Mina tried the lift once with a friend, then continued using the stairs some days. Jon resisted asking whether she was cured. The building had fixed a technical problem, not treated her anxiety.
At the next meeting he suggested collecting accessibility concerns privately. Several residents raised issues they had never mentioned in a crowded room: a heavy entrance door, dim stair lighting and a slippery threshold.
