The Mafia Boss Found His Temp Secretary Sleeping On The Concrete In The Company Warehouse—When He Opened Her Cheap Notebook, He Froze
Chapter 5 - The Ambush At The Grand Plaza Gala
The aftermath of Julian Vane’s arrest ripped through the political and economic landscape of the Midwest like a category-five hurricane. Within forty-eight hours, twenty-two corrupt port administrators, three union heads, and four shell-company directors were taken into federal custody based entirely on the forensic roadmap Margot had assembled in her gray notebook.
Yet, despite the public victory, the underworld does not bleed without lashing out.
On Thursday evening, five days after the Drake Hotel gala, Raphael and Margot were traveling south on Lake Shore Drive in an armored Mercedes Maybach, returning from a private deposition at the federal courthouse. The storm outside had cleared, leaving the road slick with black ice beneath a canopy of cold, brilliant stars.
Marcus was driving, his eyes scanning the rear mirrors with relentless vigilance.
"We have two unmarked black Suburbans tailing us from the Grand Avenue interchange, Boss," Marcus reported calmly, his hand dropping to the tactical rifle mounted beneath the center console. "They aren't feds. They’re running without headlights."
Margot stiffened in the leather seat, her fingers instinctively reaching for Raphael’s. "Julian’s men?"
"Julian’s financiers," Raphael replied, his jaw tightening into iron. "The Montreal syndicate that was buying the stolen steel. They know that without Julian, their thirty-million-dollar supply line is dead. They want the records destroyed, and they want the witness silenced."
Before Marcus could accelerate, a heavy semi-truck towing an empty flatbed trailer jackknifed across the icy lanes ahead, blocking the entire four-lane boulevard in a screech of burning rubber and sparks.
"Brace!" Marcus roared, slamming the brakes.
The Maybach skidded sideways across the ice, coming to a halt twenty yards from the truck's fuel tanks. Instantly, the two chasing Suburbans boxed the vehicle in from the rear, their doors flying open to reveal six men dressed in heavy winter parkas, raising automatic weapons.
The first hail of bullets struck the ballistic glass of the Maybach with a deafening, terrifying *clatter*, spiderwebbing the surface into frosted white fractures that held firm against the lead.
Margot gasped, ducking low between the seats.
Raphael did not panic. He leaned over her, using his massive body as an impenetrable shield, his hand resting firmly on the back of her head, his voice soothing and absolute. "Stay down, Margot. Keep your eyes on my shoes."
"Raphael, they have heavy rifles!" she cried through the roar of gunfire.
"And I have Chicago," he replied coldly.
Raphael reached into the door panel, pressed an encrypted button, and activated the Maybach’s external tactical strobes while keying his radio. "Grid Four. Clean the intersection."
From the shadows of the elevated rail overpass above Lake Shore Drive, four black tactical vans marked with the emblem of Santoro Port Security tore down the access ramps, their high-intensity searchlights blinding the ambushers. A dozen Santoro operators poured out with military discipline, returning precision fire that neutralized the attackers' engines and pinned the mercenaries against the concrete barriers in less than forty seconds flat.
A stray round punched through the driver's side mirror, sending a sharp shard of glass slicing across Raphael’s cheek as he shifted to cover Margot’s shoulder.
A thin line of dark crimson welled along his jawline, dripping onto the pristine white silk of his dress shirt.
"Raphael! You're bleeding!" Margot cried out, pulling herself up and pressing her bare palms against his cheek, terror gripping her chest.
Raphael looked down at her hands—her small, delicate fingers trembling against his skin, caring nothing for the gunfire or the mob war outside, terrified only for his life. In that moment, surrounded by sirens, shattered glass, and the cold winds of Lake Shore Drive, the last barrier around Raphael Santoro’s heart shattered into dust.
He caught her hands in his, pulling them to his lips, kissing her bruised knuckles with fierce, desperate devotion.
"It is only a scratch, Margot," he whispered, his gray eyes burning with an incandescent, holy fire. "For thirty years, men have tried to kill me for my money, my name, and my power. But tonight... you were the only one who tried to save my life."
"I will always try to save your life," she sobbed softly, resting her forehead against his chest as the police sirens began wailing in the distance. "Don't you understand that yet, you idiot? I love you."
Raphael let out a low, ragged breath that sounded like a prayer. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his beating heart, kissing her lips amidst the smoke and the flashing red lights of the city.
"Then the war is over, my queen," he murmured against her mouth. "Because from this night forward, I have something worth living for."
