The Lighthouse Keeper’s Greenhouse
Chapter 2 - A stronger foundation
Ada knew building, not gardening. She suggested moving the greenhouse behind a stone wall and anchoring it properly. Walter disliked the new position because it had no view of the sea.
"The tomatoes cannot appreciate the view," she said.
They dismantled the frame together. Walter labeled each piece while Ada checked the anchors. Two neighbors carried the glass. Another lent a trolley. The project took longer than Walter expected because people could only come after work.
He made tea and listened to advice he would once have dismissed as interference. In the evenings he checked the lighthouse from the window, though there was no longer a shift to complete. Ada suggested using those evenings to record what the plants needed instead.
