Chapter 3 - What belonged to everyone
Their first harvest was modest: seven tomatoes, a basket of beans and one cucumber shaped like a question mark. They ate it together, laughing at the unequal portions.
June brought flowers for the bench. The man with the shovel, whose name was Malik, repaired its leg. Children painted labels, sometimes inventing spellings no one corrected.
In winter, the garden became mostly mud. Nora feared everyone would drift away. Instead, Malik organized a workday to spread mulch, and June taught the children how to save seeds.
The landlord offered to put Nora's name on a plaque. She asked for a noticeboard instead. On it they pinned planting plans, shared tools and apologies when someone forgot a watering turn.
The courtyard was still small, and neighbors still disagreed. But disagreements now ended at a bench rather than behind closed doors. Nora left the gate key on a hook where anyone could reach it.
