Chapter 3 - A larger pocket
Her father finally told her about the interview. He had failed it. He had slept in the bus station, embarrassed to go home, until a baker offered him breakfast in exchange for sweeping the floor. That bakery became the one Mara now managed.
"I wanted your story to begin with something better," he said.
Mara laid the coat between them. "It did. It began with people helping you."
They invited Tomas to breakfast. He refused money but accepted a lifetime supply of the bakery's crooked bread rolls, the ones they could not put in the window.
That winter Mara hung the coat beside the bakery door with a handwritten sign: Borrow it if you need it. Bring it back when you can.
Before hanging it, her father sewed a third label inside. It contained no name, only the words: There is room for another.
