The Coat with Two Names
Chapter 2 - The borrowed journey
The tailor, Tomas Varga, had met her father during a winter bus strike. Bell was eighteen, wearing a thin shirt and carrying a letter for a factory interview. Tomas had given him his coat and enough money for the last bus leaving town.
"He promised to return it," Tomas said. "I told him to return the kindness instead."
Years later the coat came back with money in its pocket and Bell's name added beneath his own. Tomas had used the money to buy a sewing machine. He thought the exchange finished.
Mara asked why her father never spoke of it. Tomas shrugged. "People remember being rescued differently. Some remember the warmth. Some remember how cold they were."
